Sharp Pain.. Please Help?

Recommended Posts

I've been healing good, the major pains stopped on Thursday.. Last night in bed (I've been able to sleep on my side occasionally, right side.. left side is where my incisions are), I rolled onto my right side, and at some point I realized a sharp pain my left side. I figured it was a pulled muscle or something? When I take deep breaths, it 'hits' whatever it is and causes me to buckle over. When I move certain ways, it 'hits' and causes me to buckle over. I don't know what gas pains feel like? Could this be a gas pain? I've felt through my side, it's not under an incision, but it feels like where maybe my band area is. I don't know what I'm feeling. There's no knot or lump, but I can push a spot and it 'hits' whatever hurts. So I need advice. I'm not panicky yet, just figure it's a pulled muscle (so I stretch it out a little till it hurts too much), or gas (I've been walking around). I *was* really gassy last night. It wouldn't really come out either. I kept feeling it shift around inside, but nothing would come out either end. I also, have not had a real bowel movement since the surgery. That brings me to my 3rd possible scenerio. When I am able to use the bathroom, I really have to strain for the little bit of liquidy movement (sorry for being graphic!!). So maybe I strained myself that way? But its about 3 inches down and 4 inches away (toward my side) from my left breast.

Anyone have this happen or have any insight? Something I need to be watching for in case this is something else?

Help!

HI....about 2 weeks post op I developed a terrible pain on my right side. Below the rib cage....I had it checked by the doctor. She said my kidney's were fine and I probably just pulled something. I believe now I had some of the operation gas still trapped in my body. After 4 or 5 days, it did go away. However, if your pain is intense, see your doctor.

Thanks for the info!!

About 30m ago, I had a series of muscle spasms in my 'spot' that hurts. Afterward, the pain has moved a little bit to the right. So I'm a little relieved, I don't think it is a complication with the band anymore, just gas I guess?

I haven't been banded yet, but I have suffered from some pretty severe gas pains before, and I have to say, it sounds like it to me. Especially since it has moved a bit.

Not to worry you, But i had that same exact pain, whenever i took a deep breathe it was the worst pain i had ever felt, like someone was stabbing a knife into my side, not fun. Anyways point is, the pain i had was because of a blood clot in my lung. They say usually the type of blood clot i had kills people before it is even detected, so if you still are having pain, please go to the ER immediately and call your surgeon and get checked out. Good luck to you and sorry if i have scared you!!!!!!

Wow Hotpink---I had no idea she fit the criteria for a blood clot! Thanks for sharing your experience, and being honest, even though it was not probably the answer she was hoping for!!! I would have never thought about that possibility! I am glad she is off to the ER!

Good Call!

Yeah, most blood clots that go to the lung, also known as Pulmonary Embolisms do not have symptoms and are not found until the person dies from it, i just happen to have been lucky enough to have pain, that didnt get better when i took a muscle relaxer so i went to the ER. Its a very very painful pain sharp stabbing like, and it only happens when you breathe in or move just right, its not fun at all. Im so glad i informed her about the fact that she may have a blood clot, but sorry i scared her, didnt mean to do that. So now you all know, if you have a sharp pain when you breathe in on either the left or right side, that is right under your breast then GO GET IT CHECKED, it may not be harmless gas, it could be a blood clot. Good luck to you all im off to bed.

Well, thanks for the info.. but it's not a blood clot! (WHEW!!) I was panicky until we got there. They did a cat-scan with dye in my veins, and I guess it checked out. He said he doesn't know what it is, so I'll keep on wondering if it's gas or twisted muscle.. but at least it's not a blood clot!! He said if it's not better in a week to come back or call my doctor because it might be bronchritis??? I don't know where that came from, I guess because breathing causes the sharp pain. But I definitely fit the description from the online symptoms of a lung blood clot. I'm so glad it wasn't! Thanks for keeping me in your thoughts!! I had to get another IV, big bummer. Just the other day I was SO happy to get out of the hospital after lap-banding that I told fiance the next time I step foot in a hospital it better be when we're having kids. lol

I had the same feelings with the gas. It is not the same kind "normal" gas you get in your intestines, but air trapped in the abdominal cavity from when they did the surgery. I could actually feel the air bubbles sort of move or shift at times. It can be very painful. It will eventually work it is way around and reabsorb so it can come out in one of the "normal" ways we expell air, lol. That is why you hear people recommending walk walk walk,,,,,it helps move the air around and work it out. I am sorry you had such a scare, but glad everything checked out okay!

I have sharp pains like somthing is trying to pull something out of me on my left side. No problem breathing though. and I read on the net that a man bent over to grab something in the shower and his port came unstitched. Please tell me that it's not that easy. (getting alittle worried)

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
