One week - Happy but battling myself mentally

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!! Hope everyone's journey is going REALLY well whether you're waiting for surgery or have already been sleeved. Today marks 7 days since I started the 2 day pre op liquid diet (surgery on June 6th). I stepped on the scale this morning and found that I have lost 20lbs in the last week. While I had that moment of "OMG! That's awesome!! I'm happy!". Then I fall back into the "I'm still a major fattie though" and start doubting if the scale is "teasing me". I know this is part of the process...there is the difficulty of leaving the "big girl" vision behind but when does it happen?? And how do you really help yourself to break that mental block?

Look, we all have big fat heads. And probably always will look at ourselves not as others see us but how we see ourselves. 20 lbs. Great..You are on your way to being a loser like the rest of us.

There is a lot of retraining your brain in this journey and only you can control how you see this or how your adventure will go. We all see ourselves as large even if we are small and we will always take the first pot shot at ourselves because we want to do it before anyone else has the chance..Years of abuse has done that to us. It is not fair but it is what it is.

Be proud of every lb gone. That brings you closer to goal. But it is going to be a bumpy ride. Full of tears, moods, laughing, and brain training. If you don't change how we feel about food then we cannot succeed. One step at a time...And handle it as it comes along. Worry about today's worries and tomorrow there will be other things to test your resolve.

Stay off that scale! Only step on once a week. You'll feel better that way. But, yes, losing weight with the pre op diet is weird. Especially when you have support people questioning why you can't just eat like that everyday. Ugh! Too late now because I've had the surgery and moving on!

:)

You are doing awesome! Way to go. Just remember, it is a marathon, not a sprint. It is going to take a long time to get where we want to be. Try to think long term. I am staying off the scale as well. I'll check every two weeks at most. I know if I follow the plan, over time this will work.

In the 19 months that I have been on this journey I have never had a stall or gain...Never been disappointed...Want to know why? Because I only weigh myself at my Dr,s office. Through out 19 months I have probably been weighed 10 times. Each time a happy moment.... Please do not get bogged down in numbers. At this point they mean nothing except anxiety and fear of failure....

Trust me..It is self defeating to do it constantly. It is a way to sabotage yourself! :)

It has become apparent that my eyes are liars!!! I have reverse anerexia I look in the mirror and think I look cute and dont need to actually have the surgery. Then I step on the scale and the truth slaps me in the face with reality. It also has come to my attention that only people who dont think I should have the surgery are people who are my size or larger all of my healthy weight friends are supporting me 100%

It has become apparent that my eyes are liars!!! I have reverse anerexia I look in the mirror and think I look cute and dont need to actually have the surgery. It also has come to my attention that only people who dont think I should have the surgery are people who are my size or larger all of my healthy weight friends are supporting me 100%

I had opposite reactions. All my bigger friends were super excited for me, while the smaller ones (including my parents) ALWAYS immediately jump to the risks and tell me how most people still can't keep the weight off long term. Don't know if that's true or not but they basically made me feel like I was being thoughtless and risking my life for vanity because they can't understand why I don't just diet and exercise like them. In my experience, even many people that have been drug addicts still can't fathom food addiction and how incredibly hard it is to kick alone.

Anyways, I needed this surgery because I could not see myself in the mirror anymore. Just a disgusting fat stranger.

If you love yourself enough to look in the mirror and smile at the image then I assume you love yourself enough to make the right decision for your body and health.

Btw I'm 10 days post op and have not regretted a single second...not even that dreadful first day ;-)

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play, and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
