Work at Home While Recovering After Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm scheduled for VSG surgery on 6/30/14. I have an office job where I work at home 1 day a week. I have the option of working at home for the duration of my recovery. Is that something that I can expect to do or will I be in too much pain therefore requiring me to take pain medication which will make me sleep? Should I take sick leave the first week and work at home for a week or two? I appreciate any advice. Thanks.

My doctor told me I could go back to work at my office job after 1 week (gastric sleeve). If you can afford to take the time off and you have sick time available I would take 2 weeks off. If you can't do that I think your work at home option is a good one. Most people seem to be off pain meds after 3rd or 4th post op day.

You'll need at least a few days off - obviously your surgery day and the day or two after that when you're still in the hospital or just getting home. What I've learned on this site is that everyone is different - some people go back to work in less than a week, others take up to 3 months off. If you can keep it somewhat flexible and check in after your surgery before committing to what day you'll start working that would be ideal.

I telecommute full time...I had my surgery on Thursday and was back to work 1/2 days the following Monday (I worked a full day on Tuesday). I had an easy recovery with no issues, but got tired very easily. It was nice to know I could work for a few hours, then focus on me and rest or go for a walk. That Tuesday that I worked a full day, tired me out and in retrospect, I should have only worked 1/2 day that day as well. The following week I was back to full time (45+ hours per week) with no issues.

I took the recommended 6 weeks, great time to just focus on yourself and work on any kinks. I have a fast paced job with stress... So I am throughly enjoying it and glad I have short term disability to use.

I thought I could hack it but my brain was a little scrambled for at least two weeks if not a month.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
