18 months post and its confession time,...

Recommended Posts

Had my surgery 11/20/12 and was 315 the day of surgery. Most people don't believe me because I am 6' tall. I carried my weight well, but at the end of the day I was morbidly obese.

I did get down to my lowest of 175 but that was short lived. Insert a bad relationship, holidays and a breakup and you have an increase up to 185-190. I am over it. And it is waaaay too close to 200 for my taste.

That allll being said. I need help from my fellow veterans. What are you all doing to get to target and maintain? I need some guidance and I'm not afraid to try new things. I had to stop Crossfit due to an injury that is finally appearing to have healed. I would dearly love to hear as much as I can from you guys. I may not post as much but I do read what you guys share.

Oh by the way, I also am experiencing reactive hypoglycemia and I'm trying to address that as well. Thanks in advance!!!!!

You look GREAT!

Low carb, high intensity interval training and 5;2 have all worked great for me.

Man, (or WO-man :) you look great!! I can understand what you are feeling, though. I'm at four years out, regained about 27 pounds in year three and had to make myself realize I was on a slippery slope and didn't like it at all.

I, too, used 5:2 to get the regain off and lost an additional 10 pounds. I'm somewhat relazed right now but use 5:2 to maintain and discipline myself.

At 6 feet, you probably could easily make 175-80 your target goal and maintain once your body adjusts to the new setpoint. You might look into the 5:2 or try the 8 hour window eating and go back to your basics first of all.

Good luck! And again, you can do this !

You are BEAUTIFUL! I'm 6' 1&3/4". I'm struggling to get to 220. I was 325 pre-op and 307 on my DOS, but highest weight was 357. Our body types look very similar, carry most of my weight below the waist. I have been obese my entire life so the idea of reaching a "normal" BMI seems unrealistic to me. Been struggling for the past few months with the same 2 or 3 lbs. i keep saying I'm going to try the 5:2 diet but haven't gotten myself to do it yet, sigh.

Chelenka if you are healthier and happier than you were, if you are not "normal" BMI that's fine. I've seen before in the medical literature that said it is actually unrealistic to expect a % of people to get to normal weight, but with improvements in health.

In the end, isn't that what matters? Getting healthier?

@@tallysfunny You look great! Our surgeries were around the same time, and has gotten a little harder for me lately, too. I know that regain is a bite away for me. Life just gets in the way sometimes. My advice is to track what you eat, set a limit for yourself whether it's calories or volume, and pay attention to what you put in your mouth. It's so easy for me to slide a few extra calories here or there, and I don't pay attention it, the scale will start going in the wrong direction, And for me, it could be just a few hours, and I can do a LOT of damage in that time. With your hypoglycemia, a controlled diet of balanced protein/healthy carbs in small and frequent meals/snacks would probably really help, too. Whatever you find that works for you, the most important thing is that you've resolved to change it!

I have to weigh every day, keep crap foods out of the house, stock up on healthy, low cal choices, and weigh and measure foods to get back on track.

Also, I make sure I'm drinking enough Water. I tend to slack off on Water, then crave more Snacks.

You have done a great job, you look fantastic! I used the 5:2 to re-lose 22 pound regain, I still use it to maintain. With your blood sugar, you might want to split the 500-600 cals over the day instead of saving it all for dinner. That might help keep your blood sugar more stable. Maybe try it on a day you don't have much going on so you can see how you feel. I really like how it makes me feel. Best of luck, and welcome out of the lurking corner!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
