After losing 90 lbs, I'm wondering if I still need my CPAP.

How did you get off yours or know you no longer needed it? Did you have a second sleep study?

I'm really interested to hear what others say about this. I would suggest seeing your sleep specialist again and maybe doing another sleep study. I'm also on CPAP at the moment and was wondering how to come off it after surgery and some weight loss. I worry about the whole divers licence thing as well. It's really important to me to keep my licence and I don't want to have problems after coming off the CPAP.

Not sure about your divers license. I have multiple diving certifications and am also a commercial diver. To date I'm not familiar with any restrictions as they apply to the diving industry. Please let me know, I hope this is not something I have been in the dark about.

Hi,

I'm not sure where it all applies, I'm in Australia, and my Dr gave me some paper work stating that I was required by law to notify the Department of Planning and infrastructure. and that if I had an accident and had not informed them, my insurance would not cover me. It wont effect my license as long as I'm being treated ie CPAP, but if I stop treatment, even for one night, it's considered untreated and I could lose my licence. Also my Dr is required by law to notify the registrar of motor vehicles.

@@xmarycontraryx

i wore a CPAP for years

after i reached GOAL i went for another sleep study

i was all "hooked" up

the plan was.....

the first part of the night they didn't put a CPAP on me

if i was having problems through the night, they were monitoring me of course.....

they would put the CPAP on me for the rest of the evening

i woke up with NO CPAP - woo hoo :)

saw the doc next week - he said i no longer need the CPAP

big woo hoo :)

90 lbs gone!!!!

how great are you!!!! ;)

goodl luck

sweet/pleasant dreams

My sleep doctor gave me a weight target and said when I reached that and maintained or dropped lower, she would redo the study to see if I still need the machine. Looking forward to that even though I'm one of those weird people that actually loves that little machine -- it helps me sleep SO MUCH BETTER!

I know! It helps me sleep so much better also. Once I put on that mask, it acts like a sleeping pill and I'm asleep within minutes. My sleep prescription will be out of date next month, and I'm supposed to go see the doc to have it renewed. On one hand, it would thrill me not to need it any more, but on the other hand... will I have trouble falling asleep if I don't use it?

You need to have a new sleep study done. That's the only thing that can tell for sure.

Tigermouse,

Correct me if I'm wrong but are you referring to your drivers license to operate a motor vehicle or are you referring to some type of regulation that pertains to scuba diving. Your original post mentioned your "divers" license. I am a former commercial diver and I was curious about regulation pertaining to commercial underwater operations.

Thanks,

Oh, Kathy... You always make me smile!!!

Congrats on getting rid of the machine! While I have come to love my CPAP, I would love it even more if I could get a good night's rest without it! No more cleaning and filling every night, marks on my face in the morning, nearly choking myself with the cord in the middle of the night and no more ugly machine on my bed stand!!!

I think I'll call my Dr. right now and set up an appt. it usually takes a while to get in so maybe I'll lose another 15 before then! Or... Should I wait until I hit goal? I still have another 80 lbs or so to go until I'm a size 2. ;)

Thanks, all!

Love my CPAP and really am not in a hurry to get rid of it...by the by, this is the 3rd CPAP thread I have posted to this evening :P

I figure my doc will suggest another sleep study and I will decline, wanting to lose a bit more weight, sleeping like a baby, and then we will have another follow up and repeat the dance LOL :D he is a wonderful doctor and told me I could continue to use it as long as I wished.

So...heres the skinny. lol as a Respiratory Therapist that has work with Pulmonary sleep Docs for years, the general rule of thumb is a sleep study every 40 lbs or so. With that being said Im pretty sure that doesnt happen. So yes as the weight dissappears forever get the study. My question is how do I/we as CPAP users get rid of the psychological need of this device. As a user myself for the past 12 yrs its like a pacifier to me. Thirty seconds after the mask goes on Im out cold. I asked the docs about this problem and they said get a sleep study to show the physical need is gone and that would help with the psyc. need for it. Im thinking my transition may be a tad harder then that. your thoughts?

I've used a CPAP machine since 1989. I lost all excess weight in in 1994 and my pulmonologist recommended I continue using it on a very low setting due to my small neck but he didn't order a follow up sleep study.

Now many years later and moving toward my goal weight I'm making use of the technology advances to deal with it this time. I have a self-titrating machine that automatically adjusts the setting on demand and records statistics. So I monitor the statistics and adjust the high/low ranges myself .

Luckily I found instructions online on how to get into the clinician settings. I've been lectured by my CPAP supply company to not do this but it's worked out well for me ...

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
