Burping and gurgling with liquids--help!

Recommended Posts

i have a 9.75 cm band with 2.1 fill. Have been filled slowly per doc.

After last fill i have noticed a lot of burping and gurgling when i drink liquids..either hot or cold.

i wondered if i was too tightly filled but i still eat more than i am supposed to when hungry.....in other words not getting full if i was restricted right.

Any answers...suggestions, please?

i am due for a fill on Monday and am concerned about it.

Thanks,

cal

Increased burping/gas is expected with the band. Gurgling could be a sign of being overfilled or it could be normal. Since you're seeing the surgeon on Monday, make sure you discuss this with him/her. If there is no heartburn or regurgitation of food, it's not considered a problem.

For me this is a sign of good restriction, and something that makes me slow down. I used to gurgle/burp non-stop when I was first banded. I will also gurgle and burp when I'm nearing a PB, but when you're there, you know it. So if things are fine and you just happen to be burply and gurgly, I wouldn't think it's anything to be concerned about. If you begin to have pain or the liquids begin coming back up, seek your surgeon's input, that's a reliable sign of being too tight.

Can anyone tell me the chances of a slip with a band that is sutured in place as opposed to those that are not? My Dr. sewed my band in place

with 5 sutures. He told me that scar tissue would form around the sutures

and help prevent slippage. I keep reading about people that have had their bands slip after one vomiting episode. Although I have not been sick, I am scared to death of complications.

I was a self pay and want to do everything I can to lower the risk! Thanks!

This burping and gurgling is sometimes hurtful---like i have something caught from not chewing good enough---and is uncomfortible.

But.......if it's from being too tight, how come i don't have much restriction when i eat?

For example......last night i had 3 oz. ground veal, toms, onions and taco sauce in a "taco salad". It was a big bowl and i wasn't really full when i finished.

Thanks for your imput.

Cal, that is your restriction speaking to you. If you are still able to consume a lot of food you aren't tight enough. You just have to live with the gurgling. Julie

Cal, is your gut hungry or are you fighting "head hunger"

i eat only when i'm hungry....not just head hunger.

My doctor said to avoid using straws.. it adds a lot of air to your drinking and gets a lot of air in your stomach.

Cal, Do you notice you do more burping and gurgling in the a.m.? I have to be tight in the a.m. to have restriction in the evening.

So I just deal with the morning tightness.

Just wondered if you do that morning and evening or more in the mornings like me?

wait wait wait!!!! i gurgle!!i gurgle!!!!!

ive asked a lot of people about gurgling and no one seems to know what im talking about and everyone looks at me funny. FOR ME it sounds JUST LIKE sludge going down a pvc pipe.

After a few test runs i think ive figured out what it is...

for me, i think its Soup. I LOVE cambells Tomato and rice Soup UNDELUTED. its thick and i dig it... anyway after i eat it, about twenty minutes later i gurgle. To me the sensation is pleasant, even....relieving...

:)

your not a loon. I gurgle!!!

I've been gurgling since I was banded Monday. On everything (well, I'm on all clear liquid diet), but I hate that I can't guzzle Water right now. I told my family on our ride home from the doctor, how everything goes 'squish squish squish' when I drink. I felt/heard it. I don't hear the squishing anymore, but when I drink it almost always feels like a knot, and I feel it 'squeezing' through and I burp.. I don't burp anything up, but it's a burp.. I feel like I'm getting a lot of air or something. I don't like it.. but I'm not drinking in a straw, and trying hard not to 'gulp air'. I guess this is something I'll have to get use to??

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
