I have Oxford/United Healthcare insurance. I just finished my six months of requirements to qualify for surgery. I went through all of the consultations with Cardiologist, Nutritionist, Psychologist, Pulmonologist, sleep Specialist, etc. I attended two WLS support group meetings (which I found very helpful and positive), and I had my last weigh-in with my PCP today. I put in a call to my surgeon's coordinator and am waiting to hear back from her. I am assuming that the next step is for her to submit my paperwork to the insurance company for approval. Does anyone know approximately how long that process takes? TIA

It could take anywhere from several days to several weeks depending on the insurance. If the coordinator doesn't get back to you, I'd keep on persisting to get a response to see if she's submitted. I had to call my surgeon's coordinator to find out she hadn't submitted, and when I spoke with her directly, she submitted that same day. Hang in there!

It was less than a week for my approval once the paperwork was submitted. I called the insurance company to make sure everything had been submitted and they said yes it was submitted and approved but they hadn't called the Dr. office yet. So I then called the Dr. Office to let them know. A week and a half later I had my surgery.

Since you had your approval and surgery a wk and a half later. Did your job give you any problems taking off so soon/suddenly? .. I was wondering if 2 was is adequate time to give job notice. .I plan on taking FMLA for 3-4 wks..

Re, I only took one week off for my surgery. I have a desk job and as a supervisor I can do a lot of delegating for things I felt like I wasn't physically up to. (a perk I guess). I had no complications and everything went well so I really didn't need more than a week off. Anyway, the day I found out about the approval, I scheduled a week of leave and my boss was fine with it. If there had been an issue, I could have scheduled the surgery for 2 weeks after the day I selected but since I was going to have to travel for work in a month post surgery...I wanted it over with so it making traveling easier. Good luck to you.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
