Band to Sleeve Failure and "Desperate"

Recommended Posts

Please help!!!!

I had band to sleeve conversion 2 weeks ago, it all went great, healed rapidly, no nausea, no pain, no issues....

Also, NO restriction at all, from day one...

Day after surgery after my leak test, passed with flying colors I was given my first shake, drank the whole thing in less than 10 minutes, after one week on liquids only, at my first follow up I was told since everything was going great to move on to soft foods, I eat my first on day 8, finish the whole thing in no time and NO restriction, had Soups NO restriction, had cottage cheese NO restriction, had ground chicken NO restriction, had fish NO restriction, had shrimp NO restriction....

I'm consuming around 550 to 600 calories per day NO restriction.... also "NO Weight LOSS either"

I'm two and 1/2 weeks post op and only lost the weight that I gained while at the hospital with all the fluids that you get pumped up, which was only 6 pounds.... I lost more on one week during prep prior to my surgery on my own.

All and all I've only lost "2" pounds in 2 and a 1/2 weeks!!!

I' m constantly hungry because I have NO restriction....

I called my dietitian and she says you just have to try harder..... Harder at what? she says you need diet counseling, I say all I need is RESTRICTION...

Today I saw my doctor and he says maybe you are not sensitive because you had a band and your body is used to it.... used to what???

Not having restriction.... I say you removed 70% of my stomach right? I shouldn't be this hungry and I should have some restriction, right?

He says, lets adjust your meals, only have three meals a day and see you in two weeks, I'm not concern about you only loosing 2 pounds in two weeks; lets see what happens then.

Is there anyone out there that has gone through this????

I'm desperate, please help

I havent been sleeved yet but i will be a band to sleeve. Soooo..... from what I understand your nerves are still healing and until they are healed you need to follow doctors orders because you won't feel restriction. I'm sure some vets will chime in here, but this is what i've heard. Good luck to you!!

I'm not a band to sleeve conversion, but I remember the early weeks of being sleeved well. My biggest question was, why am I always hungry and why am I not losing weight?

This seems common among sleeves, especially early out. For me the real restriction came at about one month, when I started eating solid food on a regular basis and once my sleeve had healed some. In the weeks post op your stomach is partially numb which is why most surgeons tell you to measure or weigh your food, so you don't inadvertently hurt yourself. Also, if your living on only 500-600 calories you have more restriction than you think.

As for the weight loss, the first month or so is slow for some, your body is in shock... give it time, you'll get there.

Right after surgery many people are numb and don't feel restricted. So it's extremely important to measure everything and don't go over the volume specified by the doctor. Call if you don't know what amount that is. Restriction will kick in. Be patient. Are you getting all your Water in? Not enough water can hinder loss.

Also, just because you can't feel the restriction yet doesn't mean it isn't there. Be careful eating so much and so quickly.

Thanks for your words of encouragement; I'm only consuming 500 to 600 calories by choice, but I could eat at lot more. I do have the will power for now, but I don't know how long I can hold on to.

I just eat a piece of chicken and it went down like nothing, I could def eat one more but choosing not to.

I'll continue to follow orders, it's just frustrating to feel this hungry. Since there is no restriction I'm scared to fall into my old habits and say forget this and eat 1/2 a chicken and feel guilty as hell.

Every time I get hungry I reach for a bottle of Water and drink the whole thing to hopefully full my stomach in believing that I'm full.

That is why I'm reaching out to you all wise ones who have been through it before.... just looking for someone that has experienced what I'm going through.

Thanks in advance to you all

I was told by my doctor to eat something denser like chicken or fish in hopes that I get full and have restriction... Im confused now, shouldn't I have eaten the chicken?

Breathe, woman breathe!!! Everything is going to be ok. (It is too early to be eating chicken! You can hurt yourself badly!) The grehlin is still working its way out of your system, and you're having thin foods (or should be), so hunger is inevitable. I felt ravenous for weeks. Be sure you are taking acid reducers and staying well hydrated. You WILL lose weight. Your body is trying to figure out what the heck you did to it and is rebelling by trying to hold on to what you're putting in. It WILL happen. Just relax, follow the plan and exercise. Not vigorously yet. SLOW, careful walks, but KEEP MOVING. Your exercise plan starts NOW. It's very vital to the loss. Most of all- be calm. Stress hormones will fight your weight loss as well. Just keep swimming. K?

Every doc has a different idea of what is ok. My doc was ultra safe and had a VERY slow progression up to solids. Like... 5 weeks of gradual food thickening and texturing.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
