mirena and post op period

Recommended Posts

Hey guys!

I have had the Mirena in for 2 years. It has been wonderful for me (knock on wood). I do not have periods anymore maybe just a little spotting during my time of month.

My question is this..... I had surgery on Wed 2-26. On Sunday my period started. It's not enough to use anything other than a liner, very light but it is more than I have had in past years.

Is my body just reacting to surgery? Do I need to worry? I have my one week follow up with my Dr tomorrow and will ask him but wanted to see if anyone has had a similar experience.

Thanks in advance :)

The same thing happened to me. I chalked it up to the surgery. I didn't seem a cause for alarm. Our body maybe in shock from the trauma. I've had my IUD for 4 years.

The same thing is happening to me as well. I'm 5 months post-op and had virtually no periods to speak of prior to surgery. In February I had a light, but steady period for the entire month. I'm actually going for an ultrasound tomorrow to make sure the Mirena is in the right spot. My GYN nurse practitioner said this is not abnormal with the rapid weight loss. Hopefully it will go back to no periods.

Interesting. I have had the Mirena for 7 yrs. and had the same experience. I chalked mine up to the fact that I am now on Pradaxa, a blood thinner. The first time I noticed a period, I went out and bought pads and liners and tampons, but it was unnecessary. I only need an occasional pantyliner when my period hits. (But I never really needed those before surgery.)

When you lose weight you are shrinking fat cells, you never lose them just shrink them.

They are full of all sorta of things not just "fat" they are full of hormones especially estrogen and progesterone. Both of these will mess with your period. My period has yet to be regular like it used to be. I had the mirena taken out after my husband had a vasectomy so I am all natural now.

Good luck.

I have a Mirena and my period never stopped completely. I always had some light bleeding during my period and that's it. Also I have mittelschmerz (ovulation pain) pretty bad. Well since surgery, my periods are long and while they're not heavy, there is actual bleeding. My annual is in May, but I might go in sooner to get an ultrasound to make sure it's in place. But my OB did tell me that this is normal with the weight loss.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
