OK - Went in for my first fill (after 2 years). The dr. didn't know how much I had in so he pulled all my liquid out. Then he had me drink an 8 oz glass of Water. I had to stop 1/2 thru it, but I got it down. I guess I had an air bubble. THEN he wants me to drink another 8 oz glass of water - WHO CAN DO THAT??? I drank some, but it got stuck on my chest and I thought I was going to throw up so I told him so. One of the rules I have is not to gulp water and that is what they want me to do during the test?

He doesn't understand what the problem is since my band is now empty. I mean that is a lot of liquid to ask me to drink, isn't it? Is this how other people get fills?

He doesn't understand what the problem is so I have an endoscopy planned plus a barium swallow to take pictures of my lap band.

Does this sound normal to anyone?

Thanks,

Terry

I'd say you're lucky he wants to do a fluoroscopy. You'll get a good look at where your band is and get an exact fill. Maybe because it had an air bubble in the tube or band, he wants to get it right.

But yes, drinking two glasses of Water could be difficult. Some of us could do it but when our stomachs have shrunk, that's a lot all at once.

I have to drink Water when I get a fill, it tells them how much Fluid to put in. If the water gets hard to go down it's too tight, if it flows too fast, you need more.

Thank You. Do you have to drink that whole glass of water quickly?

My Dr. ask me to take a few small sips and see how that feels.

This last time I sat up with the needle still attached and sipped,

waited,

thought it might be too much so she took a little out,

sipped again,

Water went down fine so we both thought that was good enough for now.

Paws, I can answer the how quick to drink question. Yes is the answer. Even if your band is a little too tight, you can sip Water and it will pass through easily. Gulping it tells the doctor if the band is restricting the Water from flowing quickly. If you do the barium swallow you'll most likely have to gulp it down so they can track the flow through your band.

NO NO NEVER gulp! If I was to gulp it would have come back just as fast. I sit up and take slow drinks, when its starts not flowing smoothly, she backs off. With me I get a little less 'cause I have a tendancy to swell a little after a couple of days.

I've never been able to 'gulp' the barium down.....sip sip sip I can get almost 1/2 the gigantico cup they give me....but never 'gulp'....water either. Normal swallow is not impossible with my Band, but it takes time to get 'a whole glass' down.

I have to sip Water after every fill. Have had 4 and one small unfill. Never had to gulp. Have done the barium at one year check and sip that too.

I would say its a steady drinking more than sipping and not gulping. As if your taking pills.

When I have gotten my fills each and every one so far has been a barium swallow, and the doctor makes me take a large mouthful so when he fills my band he can see how fast or slow the contrast material is going through my band that way he can give me an exact fill. I have never had to "gulp" or swallow more then one mouthful at a time.

I have never had a fill with out barium so I don't know how they know how much to fill you. Do they go off of what "you" say? So if you say your not tight enough they will keep filling you till you say you are? Interesting....

They go off what I say. But I never get more than .4 at a time cause I know that it takes a couple of days to take effect. That comes from experience of trial and error. I only go twice a year to get a fill.

It's normal for me still and I was banded in Dec 2012. Still going for monthly fills and I'm able to drink 16 oz of Water eAsily. I drink quite a bit, burp then drink again. My doctor is so conservative with his fills. I do believe I'm starting to feel restriction after my last fill. I tried having some seafood gumbo yesterday and felt full after a few spoonfuls.

I wish you well!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
