Survey - Carbonated Drinks? Do u drink them?

Recommended Posts

Was given diet coke (I think) accidentally at a drive through instead of the tea I ordered and the one sip I took turned me off of it for good (I hope). The bubbles did not feel pleasant.

I did not drink many carbonated drinks before my surgery. I have had a few since (they are sometimes the only choice when I am out and about and looking for some liquid). I have tolerated them OK but still don't prefer them to non-carbonated. Like so many post surgery food issues.....try a little at a time to see how your new tummy handles it. You may do fine, you may find that you don't want them anymore.

My question is why would you be thinking about this right now. Throughout the process they tell you carbonation and sleeve surgery do not mix. Maybe once your at your goal, a year or two out, you are probably safe to have a sip or two now and then, but my question again would be why?

FYI.. Just was curious about the veterans two or three years out. I have taken my surgery very serious and followed my doc and Nut's instructions fully. I have no intentions of drinking soda anytime soon. Please don't assume I'm falling off the wagon just because I asked.

My apologies, looking back at my post I came off rude.

I guess it has to do with my thinking of the whole process. When I decided to go the surgery route, I made the decision I was going to completely let go of all the bad habits that got me to where I was. Throughout the process, between the seminars and other group settings so many people are so worried about what they wont be able to eat or drink anymore. I made the decision I was not going to do that. My focus was going to be on where I wanted to go, not where I came from or what I was leaving behind.

With that said, everyone is different. And while my way of thinking may be good to some, it may not be good for others. So once again, my apologies for coming off rudely.

I asked my surgeon what I wouldn't be able to eat/drink after all the surgery was healed and I was okay. He said I could have everything EXCEPT CARBONATION. I was a revision from a band to a sleeve, so I haven't had a soda in over 7 years. I don't miss it one bit and didn't miss it before. I drink Arnold Palmer 1/2 and 1/2 in my Water bottle (you can buy them like crystal light in the grocery store) and it's so good that I don't even think about a soda. If I go through drive through, it's diet lemonade or tea always. It's more of a pain than a treat. I'd probably just say no if I were you.

came off the carbonated beverages (including hard cider which Ioved) about 4 months prior to surgery because I know me and I watched my mom gain a significant amount of weight back post-RNY when she started drinking her soda Water. found a few crystal light flavors I like (can't stand plain Water yet) and I am glad I took my time to ween off of them...Diet Dr. Pepper addict in recovery now :P

Have not had ANY since I started my liquid diet two weeks pre-op... and I was a Diet Coke-aholic!!!!

Probably went thru 2 liters a day, easy! Couldn't pass a McDonalds drive thru without getting one ;)

My husband has also removed it from his "diet" as well...he has lost 30 pounds along with me...tho he barely needed it, just a bit of a belly...but he says the major change he made was no carbonated beverages.

I don't miss it anymore...thought it would be my biggest problem...but I'm GOOD :)

I use to stop at McDonalds 2-3 times a day... just to get a 32 oz. Diet Dr. Pepper. So was probably drinking a liter a day and had been doing so for the last several years. Caffeine withdrawal is not fun... I remember the mental "fog" and nagging headaches. Couldn't live without diet soda until now.

I can not imagine trying to digest any type of soda diet or not..and like someone mentioned above its not good for you. I was researching and read somewhere that diet soda can actually cause weight gain and belly fat. I was always bloated and felt stuffed...not to mention the gas ( sorry t.m.i. I know). Disclaimer: (Personal Viewpoint) when I think of all that I have sacrificed ( the financial cost, physical cost, etc.) there is no way I want to chance the possibility of damaging my sleeve with carbonated drinks. There may not be any harm from drinking them...but I don't want to take that chance.

I am about 16 mos post op and have not had a carbonated beverage since before the surgery. Sometimes I miss them, I actually miss carbonated flavored water more - but I only drink tea and Water now.

Oh heck no! I liked sodas but I was put on a medication that started with a T and one of the side effects was anything carbonated tasted like ass and to this day it still tastes like ass. It changed my brain receptors permanently.

I once had a few drinks of sprite about 6 months in and I immediately threw up. SO don;t care, don't miss it. No one should be drinking that crap.

Over 2 and half years post-sleeve here.

I will occasionally have a sip or two of a soda, but the carbonation is just something I really don't want to learn to tolerate. Know what I mean?

But I would suggest you try to reflect on why you want one. For some people, sodas can begin a slippery slope of consumption merely for the sake of consumption. This is something I have to do regarding everything I put in my mouth. Am I really hungry or am I feeding something else? Is it a craving? Am I repeating old behaviors which always ended up with me abusing food? Why did I get sleeved in the first place?

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
