30 days till Sleeve surgery

Recommended Posts

All kinds of mixed emotions now that it's approaching in 30 days. I refused to be like many patients who eat whatever they want all the way up until liquid diet time. I've been eating healthy and smaller portions since December. I've managed to lose some pre op weight so that's good. liquid diet starts in 20 days. Good thing I love my shakes!

Any suggestions, advice, feedback?

Just don't stress too much. It didn't help me at all. I think your approach to the diet is smart and will prevent detox headaches. But you also have a lot of time and don't need to deprive yourself of some foods you enjoy now that you may not be able to enjoy post-op. for me, I enjoy spicy foods. So when I could, I would get them because a lot of folks on here can't handle them post op. some people can't handle eggs, or dairy. So if an opportunity presents itself for you to enjoy something like that take it.

I agree. I didn't go all out on a rampage, but there were some foods that I needed to say goodbye to. Not "see ya later", but "goodbye".

I have my favorite little Italian place and went there for me favorite Pasta. Had my favorite deep dish pizza and my fave Mexican dish. I planned those out and I'm glad I did. There are alternatives to those. Like using thin layers of zucchini in place of Pasta in my lasagna, or using a cauliflower Pizza Crust, etc. and I'll take advantage of those sometime down the road. But I needed my goodbye. It really helped with my pre-op diet.

I haven't lost any weight during this 6 month requirement. I have not eaten like garbage, but I haven't eaten like a bird either. I've juiced for weeks. Tried other diets. Nothing seems to work. I hope I don't get scolded.

I drink 64 oz of Water most days. Water us weighing everything I eat. I use an awesome food journal app called "my net diary". Scan barcode a of the food you are eating and the app uploads all nutritional value. I allow myself 1200 calories right now - and I'm able to SEE the day progress. I know how to choose better since I can see where I'm at each day with cal/far/protein/sugar/carbs Etc. I'm insulin resistance - so losing weight has always been very minimal for me, but by eating 3 meals / meeting my nutritional goals everyday , combined with Aqua Zumba, taking my medicine when needed, and knowing if I don't lose this recommended amount of weight surgery will be postponed.... Everything combined has contributed to losing approx 18 pounds since January (earlier post said December). I also posted the shake I'm using. I use once in the AM And sometimes to minimize the stress of what to eat for lunch, I'll have another Protein shake. It's all natural and tastes good. I brought it with me to My nutritionist appointment and asked if it was " acceptable" - and it was actually better than what they were suggesting.

I realize this has been a long reply! Would love to chat if you are looking for any ideas. It's def important to follow the pre op dietary plans - surgery complications are much lower from what I've read.

you'll do fantastic!!! I am now a little over 6 months since surgery. I was like you before my surgery, worried, scared, excited plus whatever else emotions/thoughts hit me. Some of the things I did before surgery to keep my mind off of it was I cleaned, and cleaned and cleaned this house more. I it needed it done, it's good exercise and I wouldn't be able to do it after surgery for a while. I also took time for me. I read some good books, watched the movies I liked (I live with my boyfriend and 20 year old son), and I danced. When I was cooking and cleaning, I cranked up the tunes and away I went. Of course I was home alone lol but it made me feel good! The Protein shakes...egads...I started mixing the Protein powder in with some vanilla yogurt, or even added a few chunks of banana and made them into a milkshake. The day before surgery the only thing I did was made sure my bag for the hospital was packed, all laundry done, and I made my bed (the recliner) and got my little area ready for when I came home. After my surgery when my son and boyfriend went back to work, my boyfriend fixed me up a small ice chest to keep beside the recliner. I kept bottled Water in there so that way I didn't have to keep getting up to get a drink. One thing my hospital had me do was drink Water out of those little plastic medicine measuring cups. Like the kind you get on top of a bottle of nyquil. They had me drink 8 oz per hour to start. Those little cups were nice, I could sip on them and still keep a track of how much I was drinking. Now I use them to make little cups of Jello, almost like a Jello shot but without the alcohol. They're good for quick sweet craving fixes. Like jencovi said "don't stress it", having sleeve surgery was the best thing I ever did for ME! :) Sandy

Hello There

Congrats on your date. I think that you and I are on the same time table. I saw the surgeon today and not all of my pre-op information had reached the surgeon so I will be on the phone and hopefully I will get my date this week. I noticed that your are from Boston, where are you having surgery? I live in western Ma and will actually be having my surgery at Albany Medical center but I grew up in Melrose so I know the area,

Deb

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
