My doctor wants us to do 2 week pre-op diet, which I understand, but afterwards wants us to strive for 4 weeks of liquid dieting if we can handle it.. We were told to make it 2 weeks at least, and then, if we couldn't handle it, to slowly start introducing mushy foods.

My nutritionist has us follow this plan:

Preop: 10 day liquid (16 oz total Protein shake throughout the day, broth, sugar free Jello and popsicles)

1st 24 hours postop: Clear Liquids only

1st 2 weeks postop: 3 meals a day (no more than 4oz) that can fit through a straw (without using a straw) with 2 Snacks (protein shake). Soups mostly, but oatmeal and soggy Cereal are ok.

Weeks 3-4 postop: Soft diet...basically anything pureed. Adding meats 3 meals a day. 2.5 oz solid and 1 oz nonstarchy veggie or fruit. Canned tuna and chicken, deli meat, eggs, Beans, etc. snack 2 Protein shakes (4 oz each)

1 month postop: normal diet

From a nutrition standpoint, a full 6 weeks of liquids does not seem healthy to me and it's nearly impossible to get enough calories in without becoming malnourished. It does not take the body that long to heal from this procedure. Did you see a nutritionist or just your doctor for the diet info?

I'm back after a long absence and a bunch of weight gain. I decided that the best thing (for me) was to treat myself as if I'd just had surgery and go on all liquids for two weeks...well, I've done so well with it that I'm now in my fourth week.

Protein is the key. It will help you not only stay healthy, but also help you with hunger issues. Right after my surgery, back in 2008, I wasn't hungry for at least ten days.

You can do this. Just be sure to find a Protein shake that you enjoy. It took me foreverrrrr to find one.

No offense Karen, but you don't need to be rude. I didn't say that my diet plan was perfect and the only correct one for everyone. I said I got my plan from the dietician (who gives the same plan to all lap banders) and asked if the surgeon made the diet plan for the OP. I don't know what your freaking problem is.

I don't think karen was being rude. I think she was making an observation. What works for one person may not work for another. Each doctor has different rules and plans. It's important that we all follow the plan provided by our own doctor. Sharing your plan is fine. But someone might misunderstand your sharing as permission to go against their own doctors orders. That's all. It's hard to interpret tone in texts. I have read many different plans and they all seem to work fine for that individual. Some people had no Pre op diet at all. It's always best to follow your own doctors orders.

I have been reading posts by KAREN for a long time on this forum. She has always been nothing but supportive. She is not rude and that was not her intention!

I agree with the previous posters that Karen was not being rude. I read her post as a simple reminder that what you posted was your plan and that others should follow their own doctors plan.

I do, however, feel that your comments to Karen and the other posters was rude.

Not really. In no way did I claim to be an expert at anything. I don't really know where you got that. People before me did the exact same thing and posted their nutrition plans so I thought I would contribute by posting mine so the OP could see the difference between how different doctors prefer different nutritional paths. The way you handled this Karen is very immature. If you had an issue with what I posted in the beginning you should have started with a PM instead of your rude comment. I could have edited my comment to take out whatever you misconstrued as "expert advice" (or at least clarified). But whatever, it doesn't matter. I don't care to discuss this anymore. I am not here to bicker, I am here to learn and give advice when I can help. Good day.

      April Surgery
      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
