I had my surgery two weeks ago with Dr. Alvarez. It was a great experience. He is very friendly and checks on you at least four times a day. They have two girls there who are there for you and your family, in case you need anything. It is not like the US as far as nurses go. There are 3-4 patients there at a time and there are 4-6 nurses and 3 doctors there most of the time. You don't have to wait for anything, they are right on the ball and meet every need you have. If I had to do it again I would go back.

My boyfriend had surgery with him at the beginning of January. He has had no issues. He can certainly eat much less than I could when I was at his stage in the game, so Dr Alvarez must make his sleeves pretty small.

I was sleeved by Dr. Alvarez on Sept 27, 2013. I'm down 97 pounds. I am so glad I choose him. I love my sleeve. I had a great experience and my care was great. I never had to ask for anything other than an extra blanket. Any questions let me know.

Okay, I want to use Alvarez to do my daughter's sleeve, but am afraid with all the violence and boarder mess going on. Plus, someone on another thread stated in '06 he did not have the credentials he states he has. So, are you at all worried about the crime on the boarder or his credentials? Did you actually contact the societies he states he belongs to? Did you negotiate the price on the website at all? I really want answers to these questions. He looks absolutely brilliant on paper, but squeaky clean sets off my alarms too.

Pegsbored,

After much research we both( my Fiancé and I ) used Dr. A. He is all that he says he is and MORE!!!!!

We are both ICU nurses here in Texas and wouldn't let some of the surgeons here touch us or even our dog with a ten foot pole. Hehehe

We had our surgery on march 15th, 2014 and as of today I am at goal.!!!!!!

If you want pictures let me know-- Dr. A has probably been the best experience I have ever gone through in my entire life!!!

Starting weight 285-290.

Today's weight- 205 !!!!

We are also in his next book coming out soon in the testimonials section.

Oh and I forgot to tell you that the violence and everything that you hear about is more so and probably in Juarez or any of the other border towns but Piedras Negras is pretty calm and plus you don't ever have to worry, they come over the border pick you up at the holiday inn express that they put you at and take you directly back over the border straight into the hospital which is less than a mile from the Border......it was absolutely an AMAZING EXPERIENCE!!!!

BECAUSE I HAD THE SAME CONCERNS YOU HAVE!!!

I had my surgery done with Dr. Alvarez on July 8th! I am down 29.1 lbs and doing great. I went there after seeing how successful my sister and her mother-in-law's surgery had been. He is a top notch guy with quality staff. I would recommend to anyone!

I two spoke with Susan and did the history and health check. I will go through the gastric sleeve surgery with Dr Alvarez in Piedras Negras Mexico in Feburary of 2015. It will cost me $8500 plus passport and round trip to and from San Antonio Tx. I have to deposit $1000 dollars first though. I'm working on that now. Then I'll send $1000 per month until February 2015 and go with the rest leftover to pay. :)

I also have been doing a lot of research and have decided on Dr Alvarez. I recently was finding that some of the doctors over in TJ do the sleeve cheaper, but I just can't get past how confident I feel in all I have researched about Dr Alvarez. To me it is worth the little more money to have a sense of "calm and confidence" I feel. I am aiming for the last week of January 2015. I am very excited and eager to start this journey. Thank you to all who post about your experiences...that is a tremendous help for those of us researching. Thank You!

@@ShawnS16 yes :) exactly! I can't found any reason not to choose Dr Alvarez. The more I read about him the more excited I get. :) Tijuana is just a little to far for me. I am in Louisiana and Dr Alvarez is much closer than the other doctors. His fee is a little higher but I believe it is worth every penny. It's cheaper for me to travel to San Antonio Tx then to San Diego California. By the time I pay for everything I would be better off going to Dr Alvarez anyway. I'm sold! :) :)

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
