Waking up and pain

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone,

Trying to figure out a morning plan. I've been waking up in a good amount of pain and it takes almost an hour to normalize my sleeve. How do you get going in the mornings? I'm only one week out from surgery but I'm returning to work soon and I need a plan. Also I've been weirdly experiencing lower back pain as we'll. Any tips for me? Thanks in advance.

I will be interested in answers to your question as I too wake up in a bit of pain. It doesnt seem to ease up until after I have been up for awhile. thanks for posting this.

The pain could be caused by gas. Has your surgeon prescribed an acid reducer for you? If not, try Gas-X strips, they may also help with the back pain. Good luck.

Thanks BettySap for your tips. I will definitely try it. Perhaps it is morning gas. I'll let you know my results soon.

KatieJo I had a feeling I wasn't alone on this issue, thanks for letting me know I wasn't losing it :)

BetttySap I am on protonix as an acid reducer but in taking it upon waking. Perhaps I should be taking it before bed...

The pharmacist told me I should take protonix in the morning preferably an hour before eating. If I miss even one dose, I am in awful burning pain.

One week post op I still had pain. I slept in my recliner, it helped a bunch! I also used heating pads for my back to help move the left over gas that was trapped from surgery. My pain isolated itself in my back and left shoulder. Walking and heating pads were the only things that really helped. I do want to mention that the left shoulder discomfort from the left over gas lasted several weeks. After the month mark I could still feel it when I walked briskly or trotted. It did FINALLY go away after 6-8 weeks. But try the heating pads!

I also take my acid reducer in the morning and haven't experienced anything like you're saying. Like some of the others have said, walking also helps. I never used a heating pad so I can't comment on that although it does sound like it would help.

Thanks AtlantaRed, Curvvy, and BettySap! I've been using my heating pad and it definitely helps. I'll keep taking my protonix in the morning. I'm going to try a different sleeping position tonight. Today was just a tougher day for me but as I type this through lots of prayer, family support, and some extra pain meds I'm feeling lots better. Oh I did some extra walking as well. I truly appreciate the feedback everyone! You throw these questions out there and you don't know if anyone will even get back with you, I'm so happy you all did. The support is greatly appreciated!

I am also feeling better after reading these posts. I do get mild pain if I sit for too long...and I was worried.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
