Anyone have the Mirena?

Recommended Posts

Two years ago when I first considered it my pcp who is a np said she could insert it in office (I have kaiser)... Now kaiser only allows obgyns and few mds to do it.

It's understandable that the insurance company would insist that obgyns do it, due to the coil being inserted by people who didn't know what they were doing and caused a lot of pain and injury to many.

I think the Mirena is good...it certainly helped me.

I've had one for about a year. The insertion was very painful. For the first 3 mos. I had cramping and bleeding every day. I have continued to lose weight though and after about 3 mos the cramping and bleeding subsided and I now only have light cramps and spotting for a couple days a month for my period. I'm happy with it now but the first 3 mos. were rough.

Yes it was painful and I had those same symptoms you describe. I was lucky, the cramps and spotting only lasted a month.

I've had one for almost 5 years and it is due to be replaced. I'm having it removed entirely. My NUT and ARNP who acts as my OB have both strongly suggested I have it removed and that while there is no data that the Mirena causes weight GAIN, both told me that a large percentage (OB said 60% roughly) of patients report difficulty losing. For the record, my ARNP and NUT do not know each other but they are both women.

With Obamacare, it will only cost me my dedictible to have my tubes tied as sterilization is a form of birth control and entirely covered. I plan on doing just that later this year. I realize this isn't an option for everyone but I am most definitely done having children!

Have had the Mirena for 4.5 years. I love it! Did not hurt when they put it in. Was able to lose (and gain) weight with it. The best part is that I had terrible periods before I got it and and after it was placed they were so much better! I used to use several tampons a day and panty liners, now I only ever need a pantyliner. It is great!

Love my mirena. Tried para guard and had a tubal pregnancy with major surgery to remove the fetus and save me. Somehow convinced myself to try mirena and it's been the best decision ever!

Yeah it was pretty uncomfortable during insertion but they were very accommodating by putting a cool wash cloth on my forehead and offering me crackers or juice and 3 people offered to help dress me and walk me to my car. The cramps are getting obnoxious, they just feel like bad period cramps now but I am glad the insertion is over. I was hot, sweaty, and dizzy and felt nauseous during.

I have not had the mirena but for the past 3yrs I have had the nexiplon or implenon. It is a stick placed in the arm. I know its not in as long as the iud but this had less complications and no need to worry about a dislodged iud or tubal pregnancies. Or frequently checking it yourself. I love it and since my sleeve I haven't seen any weight gain effects.

I was wondering about that! I emailed my obgyn and let her know what was going on and she thinks I might be expelling my mirena and she said if he puts another one in that the chances I'll expel that one are 30% higher. I can't take the pills they make me bat shit crazy... So I may need to look into that.

Have had the mirena for about 1.5 years. The first six months were painful with a lot of spotting and breakthrough bleeding. I never stopped getting my period like promised but I guess everyone is different. The pain went away and I never noticed that I gained weight. I got mine about 5 months before I had my sleeve done although the iud had nothing to do with wls. I have had no problems losing weight.

I have had the Mirena for almost 4 years now. I have not experienced any side effects, nor have I had any bleeding since insertion. I don't think it has slowed down my weight loss since WLS. Unfortunately, every body is different and handles it differently.

I *love* my Mirena! After about 5 years of HEAVY periodic bleeding due to peri-menopause, finally found an OBGYN who didn't just pooh pooh my symptoms with "well, everyone's different, yes, things can get heavy or light, you just have to put up with it till it's over..." -- sorry for TMI, but weeks of passing major blood clots, being terrified to even stand up for fear of "flooding", always putting towels underneath me, etc -- ugh, don't want to remember all that -- but got the Mirena about 2 years ago and it literally changed my life - for the better! Don't know how/if it affected weight gain, but at least the **&&^^ bleeding STOPPED.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
