Exercise Question

So I started this week training for a 5K and I have been running everyday. I'm SO sore. Like it hurts to walk kind of sore. I'm wondering if this is normal (I haven't exercised in probably 13 years) or if perhaps running everyday is too high impact and I should switch to every other day and do something else in the off days like cycling or a group class or something.

What do you all think? What are your exercise routines like?

You and I have almost the same surgery date- I was 9/9/13. You have done way better than me- good job! In my experience your soreness is normal. This time two years ago I was 140ish and running everyday, and there were days where I was sore even though I was conditioned to the exercise. Now though, after having gained quite a bit of weight and working on losing it, I am definitely sore after a good run and it hasn't been 13 years for me.

My current exercise routine is roughly:

2 hours of MMA x 4 weekly

1 hour of boxing x 2 weekly

3 miles running x 3-4 weekly

I also don't do much on the weekends so this gives me a nice recovery time for the weekdays.

I started the couch to 5K program a year ago and ran my first half marathon on Sunday. Running every day when you first start is really hard on your body. I recommend every other day and cross train the other days by biking, lifting weights, or swimming. Always have at least one day of rest a week.

I am only allowed to do hand weights and walking for another three weeks, but am looking forward to getting back to Pilates. My class is on the machine (Reformer). It is hard work, but it tones all of my muscles and especially my core.

I've never particularly liked excercise, but I really enjoy Pilates. The only thing is, it is mot an aerobic excercise, but I get that on the elliptical,

I also did my jump into running by following a Couch Potato to 5K program. Ran 3xs a week, skipping days in between. I am still following it after running my first 5K, just increasing speed and distance. I also swim 2xs a week, really feels good on the body after a couple days of running. Cross fit and doing the treadmill at 5-10% inclines fits into my week also. I try not to do the same thing all the time so that my body doesn't get used to the exercise and will keep burning. Believe me, I am no expert but I couldn't run everyday, my 48yo body won't take that :) Good luck on your exercise path !!!

Is it your legs (quads, hamstrings, glutes) that are sore? It could just be that your legs are starting to perhaps build some muscle (Fiber teardown/rebuild). I know that I just started interval jogging about 1.5 weeks ago and had my sleeve on Dec 9/13, and my legs were pretty sore for a few days. i will eventually jog a full 30min duration on the treadmill some day, but I'm not there yet, so it's 2min jogging, 1 min walking for now!

Yeah it's my legs. I think it's probably a good sore. No shooting or sharp pain. Just achey muscle groups. I'm thinking maybe more stretching before and after may help.

Thank you for the recommendation. I think that is what I will do. They have this cycling/yoga combined class tonight. Maybe I'll give that a try then pick up the running again tomorrow & take Sunday off. Thanks!

I just finished the couch to 5k training app and calls for running 3x per week. I also do 1 to 2x per week of strength training with hand weights and 1x per week of elliptical.

I am on week 3 of 0 to 5K. I love it and I love the soreness because I can feel muscles under the blubber. Such a great feeling. The runners high is amazing. I run MWF and do circuit training on TTH. Alternating your exercises is good. Good luck.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
