3 days post op- feeling of stuck with liquids

Recommended Posts

I was revised from the band to the sleeve on 1/13/14 and have been feeling pretty good. Pain has been minimal and energy is coming back slowly. I am wondering if anyone has had this feeling. I'm on a full liquid diet and been having some weird feelings with it. After I take a drink of my Protein shake or have some Soup or yogurt (vanillia, no fruit pieces), I get this weird stuck feeling or pain (but its not severe or anything) more like pressure. My swallow test was fine and there are no leaks. I just wonder if this weird stuck feeling/pain/pressure is normal. I'm thinking that it is just because my new stomach is just swollen and will be fine in a couple days.

Probably the air you're taking in with each sip. It will ease up as your stomach swelling goes down and you pass more of the gas.

Thanks, I hope so. I think its just swollen. Clear Liquids seem to do down with no problems but it seems if it is thicker like Protein Shakes and yogurt it feels stuck. I'll give it a couple days and see how it goes and if it still feels stuck I'll give my doctor a call.

Think you put your finger on it when you said clear liquids are going down fine but thicker liquids are feeling stuck. At only a few days out, everything is still very swollen and the feeling you are likely to be having is the signal to tell you to stop drinking, you're full. The little you have had to drink in terms of Protein shake or yogurt may not seem enough to have filled your stomach - but it will be.

Take it easy, stick to what you're doing but don't force anything down. As the swelling goes down over the next couple of weeks, it will get easier and you will notice a difference soon.

Congratulations on your weight loss to date, good luck on joining the sleeved side :-)

My surgery was the same day and I'm having the exact same feeling. I've found that if I breathe out through my nose while I take in tiny (and I mean tiny) sips it goes down easier. I was even hearing whatever I drank go down as it went which I found strange. Also, I've found that standing or being in a totally upright position for drinking helps me. I am only allowed clear liquids now so I haven't had any shakes. Hunger pangs versus gas are difficult for me to determine right now.

I haven't been hungry at all. I try to make myself drink something every couple hours. Gas is not a problem and my family is just glad its all air for now!

I guess I always over worry about things! I'm worried that there is a blockage or I might have a leak, but everything checked out fine. I guess i just need to relax and let myself heal.

Sounds the right thing to do :-) You won't feel hungry just now. I am almost 9 months out and I don't really feel hungry the way I used to. It's different but, trust me, it's all worth it!

And if you need reassurance for time to time, you've come to the right place here....

This is kind of a random thought but what a RELIEF it is to not constantly feel hungry! I look back now and see just how dependent my entire days used to be based on consumption of food. I used appetite suppressants with previous diets but honestly, once I got used to them after a couple of days the hunger just came back. I may not have eaten as much as I did without the AS's but the hunger every few hours was still there. My mind feels more open and free to explore so many other possibilities outsides the confines of 'what's for lunch? ' and 'what's for dinner? ' and for me that's a huge milestone! The foods I was eating were turning my mind and body into sludge anyway and I felt so hindered by fatigue. New ideas and possibilities seemed out of my reach because my thinking was so clouded and literally 'weighed down' by food!

Maybe I am on a "pink cloud" like the 12 steppers say...but that's just fine with me because it feels great! :D

I just had my band removed yesterday with a revision to the sleeve. I'm home now. Feeling a little achy but more tired than anything. Taking liquid vicodin a few times today. Hoping I don't stay on that for too much longer.

I will be on clear liquids for a week: Water, SF Jello, SF popsicles, broth, decaffeinated tea or coffee, crystal lite & a few other liquids. I was told to stay away from dairy products the first week (yogurt / milk). They told me this would help with any swelling & weaning myself to the next stage, which will be full liquids. That's when I can have low fat plain greek yogure, cream of wheat or oatmeal, smooth creamy Soups, mashed potatoes, SF pudding, slim fast low carb shakes, SF hot chocolate, low fat yogurt smoothies & low fat milk, lactaid or soy milk.

.

With that said, maybe it's too early for dairy products... wait a few more days,

I'm blogging about my journey under MissionSlimpossible. Please feel free to follow me, give me advice or learn from my journey.

thanks everyone. I appreciate the feedback from everyone!

I had hiatal hernia repair with my sleeve and had tons of air, so every time I sipped I had this pain in my upper abdomen below the breast bone. This has subsided but I do notice with some of my Protein shakes that I have this lump feeling in my throat when I swallow. I guess this is why we will need to chew slowly and carefully? But as of today I have noticed wicked hiccups. what gives?

YES!! My surgery was 1/7/14 For the first week every time I had my Protein shake or drank I felt the pain right between my boobs. LIke a stuck feeling. I found out I was sucking in when I drank. Try to let it fall in your mouth. Take a smaller sip...and wait about 3 mins before you drink again. It was worked for me...last 4 days nows I have been feeling great. I know it sucks to hear slow down...but once you get that part down you will be ok. Remember...kinda like a Water bottle. squirt it in your mouth...dont sip...thats why we can't have straws

Everything seems to be fine now. My stomach must have been just swollen a lot! I had some pudding and didnt have any problems. I'm going to try vanilla yogurt in the morning. They had me on yogurt in the hospital the day after my swallow test and it was strawberry with strawberry pieces in it which i thought was weird since i thought it was suppose to be liquids without any lumps. I had a hard time eating it because it was so thick! It didn't hurt or anything maybe cause i had so much pain meds I didn't even notice. I'm still trying to find a Protein shake that I like. chocolate gets old so i bought some vanilla and blended up some strawberry's and bananas. I suppose i can live on shakes like that for the next week or so.

I'm preop but have been trying different shakes. I love the Atkins shakes. The mocha one is my favorite. Advocare is the worst so far. EAS is pretty good. Going to try Unjury tomorrow.

I am 3 days post op and hungry :-(

Dear Feeling hopeful,

I can relate! At first I thought it was just head hunger...but in having to prepare meals for my family and shop for groceries etc. it seems that I am having a difficult time (still) determining whether I have head hunger or if I am actually hungry. I know I don't feel "full" because I am able to sip liquids pretty much all day and all the way until bedtime. Of course with all of this liquid going through me I am in the bathroom constantly, which is not that big a deal for me because I've always had a tendency to drink a lot of fluids...but as I said - preparing food that I can't eat is a little challenging. Last night I made a bag of rigatoni & sausage in marinara sauce with garlic toast for my husband & daughter. Cooking it and smelling it was tough especially since, according to my paperwork, things like Pasta, bread and sausage are pretty much "off the menu" for me for the rest of my life unless I want to be in pain or feel sick. And really I am okay with that, but I've been on liquids for nearly a whole month now and going through that grocery store...seeing a lot of my old favorites - not an easy task. I also think that the pain medication lowers my defenses and makes me crave sweets. I know this is so because in the past I've had spine injuries and was in pain management. I can remember times when I would wake up in the middle of the night just craving chocolate or candy. I can't wait until the pain subsides and I can get off of this stuff so those feelings will go away. I am excited this week that I'll be able to drink the Protein shakes again. I'll just have to be sure that I go really, really slow and definitely not make more than I can take in.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
