Hi Everyone, I might need shoulder surgery and I'm wondering if this will interfere with my bypass surgery. I will have all my requirements in on April 7, but I'm thinking shoulder surgery will be before April. Has anyone had a similar situation?

Hi I had to have hip surgery on Dec 23 2013, so glad I did . My surgeon wants me to wait for at least 4 months before my gastric surgery. I thought it was a long time, but your body DOES need to heal. I now feel great, and I think I am about ready. All of your systems need to be healed. I want to feel real good before I do the gastric bypass!

Sally, Rinny, IKM96 - where are you? I haven't seen any posts from any of you. I finally have a surgery date of 15 Apr. It took a week for my approval from Medicare. Sally how are doing since your surgery? Mary did you back out or do you still plan to have surgery? I know you need shoulder surgery first. Is that still on for April? IKM did you have your hip surgery yet? Hope all goes/went well.

Hi Pquinn and everyone, I haven't beenon the site lately ,trying to get everything done before I get my shoulder fixed because it sounds like I'll only have one arm for awhile. I'm still going to do bypass as soon as I heal. I have all my requirements done and Dr. Is going to submit to ins. on April 7. I wish I could do the bypass first but I'm experiencing to much shoulder pain, little sleep and a crabby attitude. Pquinn ,I 'm with you ,I'll be a better buddy ,I promise. You keep me posted and I'll keep you posted. As to what happened to everyone else, I thing spring is getting everyone away from the house and enjoying the outside. Stay safe, be happy, enjoy life.

I had rotator cuff surgery about five years ago. Actually it was surgery to remove bone spurs in my shoulder socket but it turned out I had torn my rotator cuff sometime between my MRI and my surgery date. Too bad - the bone spurs would've been a 1-2 week recovery but the rotator cuff was a long, long, loooong recovery. Three months in a sling, months of stiffness and physical therapy exercises. Took about a year to have normal range of motion w/no pain. But after many years of worsening pain till I couldn't even use my arm anymore, it was worth it!

Mary, so happy to hear from you! Hope your shoulder heals quickly so you can get on with your RNY. When is your shoulder surgery? I'll probably need a friend after my surgery and just before. I'm already nervous but might be a basket case a day or two before the surgery!

IKM glad to see you're still here as well. How are doing since you hip surgery? Hope you're in a lot less pain now.

Pat

pquinn181, what is it with the shoulders, I just scheduled my fsurgery or June 2, outpatient, just a clean up, no rotator cuff repair -Thank goodness. Had major l-shoulder done years ago and it wasn't fun.

I have been reading posts but not participating much. I am actually doing well. losing 4# a week average which is good but had a huge plateau that was very frustrating. Still on soft Protein only which is very boring. Had night nausea for weeks but that has stopped. Eating 1-2 ounces 3 x day and I am never really hungry which is very weird. My energy is finally back, working out twice a week with a trainer.

So glad you have a date, this has been a learning experience everyday. I'm actually trying chicken wings for dinner, minus the skin, am looking for different ways to get my Protein. Promise I will keep up on the posts!!!!!!

My surgery is on the rotator cuff which was also torn by a bone spur, I also have arthritis but he said it may not get any worse once the spur and cuff are repaired.. If the arthritis gets worse we can address it then. That is a big relief. 4 weeks in a sling then I can start physical therapy, I should be good to go for bypass by July? I'm glad to see all the gang is still alive and kicking. LOL. Take care ,be happy love life

Hi to all of you who are having bypass surgery soon. I know how apprehensive you are feeling right now. I wanted to back out right up to the day of my surgery last October! I didn't tho and I am so glad! I have lost a little over 60 pounds and I have never felt better! I just regret that I didn't do this years ago. I have had no complications at all. The only complaint I have is I have had many stalls. I go weeks without losing any weight, but from what I have read on here that is normal for some people. I wish all of you the best!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
