Drinking pop

Hi! I am wondering, does anyone else drink soda after the sleeve? I'm not talking right away but eventually? I don't drink a whole lot of it now but I do like my occasional diet coke or coke zero. I usually drink this when we go out to dinner on fri and sat evenings.

Well, I'm still pre-op, and I did love and miss my soda! I asked my surgeon this question, and his response...'I strongly suggest against it!' I think it's supposed to be a bit uncomfortable.

I drank a lot of fresca pre-op. I drink a couple ounces of 80% flat coke zero a few times a week now, but not obsessively & I'm officially probably not supposed to :/

My nut told me was ok to drink some but needs to be flat.

The reason sodas are not recommended to my understanding is because they can cause discomfort, stretch your pouch making you eat more, and when I was banded I was told the acid in soda can cause erosion where the band is if it sits there waiting to go down. That place isn't like our stomach and the acid can damage it.

20 months post op. I was a diet coke junkie pre op...2-3 per day. Now maybe 1 can every 6 weeks. I get an urge and it goes down OK. I burp a ton and my tummy burns a little. Not the best feeling, but I sadly enjoy it as a treat. Have replaced soda with lots of coffee, iced tea and Water. It gets easier when you step away from it. Plus you realize how bad it is for you.

I was a Diet Coke-aholic... I probably drank 2 quarts a day...seriously!!! I have not touched it since my liquid diet- pre-op - ...we had to attend a class and she showed us what the carbonation does to your stomach; don't do it... look for alternatives, such as crystal light items... my new obession is decaf iced tea (never drank coffee)... I add tocani SF syrups...raspberry is my favorite...YUM...

We were told that caffeine makes you hungry and that drinking carbonated drinks cause discomfort. I use to drink soda daily since my sleeve on Friday I haven't craved it yet and I mean everything I use to drink had caffeine in it.

I'm a yr out and drink maybe 2 a week decaffinated pop. The only repercussions is a lot more gas.

I miss my diet dr pepper. I only drank it occasionally when I would eat Mexican food. Now ...post op. ..none at all.

As a Diet Coke-aholic, I have sworn off it since my surgery. We have all read that people that drink diet sodas gain more weight and I have to wonder if it isn't because it helps to stretch the stomach. For those of you that aren't addicts, you can probably get away with small amounts eventually, but I think it might be uncomfortable.

I did love a fountain diet coke or diet Dr. Pepper before surgery. Haven't done it since. Sigh.

Thanks everyone for the responses! It looks like I'm gonna have to give it up then! :(. It is gonna be very hard for me especially since I don't like to drink water when I eat! I guess I will have to get use to it. I wish there were other choices at restaurants that are no calories besides water and diet pop. Oh well!

You are not supposed to drink when you eat anyway. I never get any drink in a restaurant. Even at a yr out I only drink 1/2 hour before and after a meal.

For rhw94123 and others who miss Fresca......I had 2 packets of grapefruit Syntrax whey Protein and made some up with Crystal Light Lemonade. Unexpectedly, it pleasantly tasted like Fresca. I like it so much that I went back to mybariatricpantry.com and ordered a large container of it. They have about 10 flavors of nectar which you can get in a sample pack as well as large cartons. I find the nectars easier to swallow than the shakes. It has 23 grams of protein per serving.

carry some single packets of crystal light, etc., with you if you want something other than water... and I drink tea... at home I have my decaf tea...when I am out I get regular iced tea... some say that caffeine whets your appetite, but since I only have one or two (on occasion), I haven't found it to be a problem
