stacey131 got a reaction from dani2728 in Pre Op Diet - Lost 6 Lbs So Far...how I Made It Bearable
So my surgeon requires a 2 week all liquid diet prior to surgery to shrink the liver. Given that it is for my safety as much as his convenience, I am following it to a "T." I think that I have been more stressed about the 2 weeks than anything else. Well, here I am day 4 and have lost 6 lbs so far (and actually feel pretty good). I thought I'd share some things that have helped me...
I didn't eat like a pig (my normal style) and then go cold turkey.
I tried 1 shake a day, 2 a day, 3 a day leading up to the full fast. I felt weaning myself off food and especially sugar helped me.
I bought a 1 liter water bottle and set mini goals for intake through out the day
I bought a range of shake flavors (pretested them all)- sweet, savory (chicken flavored) and plain protein. I find that I get sick quickly of having the same thing for every "meal" so I switch it up
My surgeon allows you to mix with water, milk or yogurt...so I switch that up to so I feel like I have some variety of texture
This may not be for all as it is expensive...but I bought myself a VitaMixer. This thing is AMAZING! I make coffee ice cubes then mix a chocolate powder with milk or water for a yummy frozen treat as well. I am actually saving a lot of money on food...so I splurged. I figure it will be good too for after surgery during the mushy stage

Yes, NASH damages the livers ability to break down fat because it is engulfed in fat. I started taking milk thistle and probiotics, who knows...good news is that. NASH improves as you lose weight. It might take longer but you are healing your liver in the process. NASH is such an unrecognized side effect of obesity. When I got my diagnosis I flipped, and needed to learn a,l that I could.

6 months out you should be able to take descent sips. I am 3 months Ana can finish a snapped in 5. My trick is to plan my begs by size. Whether you work or not, decide you will do 5 12 ounce beverages. You'll finish 1 by x time, the second by y time etc... It's an old WW trick. If you fail to plan, plan to fail. Drinking was hard for mes, but the schedule helped. If I was going to the mall, I knew that I had to drink 2 12 oz drinks and I threw them in my bag...

Despite waiting 6 months, counseling and seeing a nutritionist...I cheat! I am 3 months out and I am human. None of us got here because we could effectively stick to a diet. The difference for me this time, is that I am forced to not slide too far and it is so much easier to get back on track. I have good days and bad days. My psychological make up likely won't change....but i am working on it. Please, please don't beat yourself up.

3 weeks at the same weight. Following the diet, with occasional cheat. A potato chip here, a cookie there....but WAY less than I ever ate pre-surgery. I am 3 months out and can tolerate anything. The dry chicken breast gets me...but that is it. Anyway, yesterday I was home cleaning all day and that is my toughest. Being home, my tendency is to eat. So I did (at my new reduced level). 1 protein bar, 2 single serving bags of veggies chips, 2 string cheeses, 6 Tyson wings, 6 Oreos, 2 pieces of Bonnie bell cheese over an 18 hour period. And today...I lost 1.5 lbs.

I agree. Depends on the protein intake. It's not that hard to get 60-80 in if you're committed. I am a bit lazy and I use the premier protein premade from Costco....yum! As a crutch on days that I need it, sadly, it also solves my choco craving.

    Pre- op, my fears:
I will never be able to eat like a Normal person again
I will miss my favorite foods
I can't possibly eat so much Protein
I am afraid of the nausea
I am afraid of the pain
I am afraid of dying under anesthesia
I am afraid of the surgeon damaging my liver
I am afraid of waking up after anesthesia and being really nauseous and sick
I am afraid of a leak
I am afraid of my tastes changing
I am afraid that I will have an obstruction
I am afraid of contracting a hospital born virus
I am afraid my energy will never return
    POST OP TRUTHS:
2 weeks out and I am eating and tolerating GOOD food
There is nothing so far that I couldn't eat: panera Soups, chili, lobster, portabella mushrooms, bean Soup with cheese and sour cream
I make protein a priority, 50 grams (shake plus a Greek yogurt by noon)
I haven't had 1 nauseous moment except for right after surgery and zofran fixed that
The pain was a 2 out of 10. I was off the Diluadid drip the next day and never took the hydro condone
Once home. I did feel some heaviness in my lower belly and the gas was no biggie. I walked 3 hrs after surgery a d just kept walking
Anesthesia was a brainer. The anesthesiologist asked me about my job and then told me it was over! They were awesome
I woke up feeling totally fine. A little discomfort, but coherent and not in pain
Had a leak test in the hospital and all clear
My tastes have changed, but for the better. Too sweet turns me off
Everything is moving through the system as planned...no obstruction
Wounds healed in a few days, was s.epping on my belly by day 3
2 weeks out and I am doing the revlon run walk in NYC
So happy with how I feel and food has been deprioritized from my mind. I do get craving and I do feel genuine hunger, but I am able to address it. I ate cheese and crackers for dinner tonight...I had a yearning for it and i made it work.
To anyone debating...go for it! I can't tell you how your mind and body change for the good once your on the losers bench!
