Hello everyone! Dr. Williams at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. Required 3 month supervised diet of high Protein, low carb. No 2 week liquid required, just the 2 days before surgery. I've lost 18 pounds since starting in November. Last apt is Feb 14th and all should be done by then to submit for approval and get a date. I'm hoping for end of Feb but I'm thinking it'll be early March. So very ready to get this show on the road! Looking forward to getting to know y'all!

Yo, April! I just had my EGD done yesterday, and when they gave me my IV, they numbed my arm first... Maybe ask for that so it's not so bad! :) I thought of you when they did it. Although, they still couldn't get it started, and a lady from the IV team came down and got it stated, minus the numbing stuff, and I barely felt it. You got this! There's nothing to be afraid of. :) (I hate needles. Although I have 6 tattoos.... Go figure. Hahaha)

Oh! And only 31 days (if you don't count today, or the day of surgery) until surgery. Holy crap I'm SO excited. I can't believe how fast time is moving. An how cool my professors are with me missing a class or two for this. They're all happy and think I'm making a great decision! Especially my anatomy prof. He had bypass 10 years ago and is happy for me.

Sarahjane, I have tatts too. It's the whole intravenous part. But heck yeah I'll definitely ask for it to be numbed. I'm sorry that it took a bit to get yours in.

How did the EGD go? I don't have to have one but know they tell a lot of info about ulcers, hernias, etc.

I know!!! It's crazy!!! I go from doubt to fear to excitement. I keep telling myself all the benefits and my daughter is such a cheerleader for me, which helps a lot. It is getting closer n closer and I feel obsessed because I keep making lists of what I need for the hospital and for after I get home etc. then I rewrite them. Lol

Oh, it went fine. Since they numbed me for the first 2 attempts at an iv, I didn't care much. Hahaha. And Apparently took all of about 10 minutes! I woke up and said "already?" And then promptly fell back asleep. Turns out I have a real mild case of gastritis (reflux) which is weird since I never have problems or have the actual feeling of reflux. I must not have anything else, as all they told me dad was gastritis.

I think I'm so excited about all of this, that there isn't room for fear or nerves. I really can't wait to lose some weight and be healthier, and hopefully get rid of my inhaler. YES. IM SO OBSESSED WITH THINKING ABOUT SURGERY. Like, I can't stop reading this message board, talking about it, thinking about it... It's non stop. I need to stop so I can actually learn things at school. Lolz.

So glad everything went well with the scope! I know, I'm up til the wee hours of the morning on the board and googling stuff. I think my friends and family may strangle me beforehand because I won't shut up about it. Lol

Yeah, I finally had to make a mental note to stop talking about it so much. I'm sure y dad and friends are sick of hearing me talk about it. Plus, my best friend was going to have the surgery last year, but her insurance through work won't cover it, so I try not to talk about it around her... She's happy for me, but bummed she's not doing it. I wish she would. We're definitely why each other have gains weight. We're the "go out to dinner" buddies. Haha.

My sister and closest friend have both had it. My sister was banded over 10 yrs ago in Mexico and had great results. Lost about 130-140 pounds. But her band screwed up and she had to convert to the sleeve so she wouldn't regain. My friend had hers over a year ago and has lost about 140 pounds. At least when we do go out to eat we can all 3 share! Lol

I mainly talk about it with those 2 and what's funny is my sister always asked ME questions even though she's sleeved and I'm not because she knows I'm always on here.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
