December post ops

Recommended Posts

Hi. I haven't posted with y'all yet. My RNY was 12/23/13 and I'm now 5.5 weeks out. I was 234 and am down 55 lbs.i shouldn't complain but I am worried. I'm bummed because I've never really felt my pouch, can eat 2 cups or more of most anything. I get in my Protein only eat about 900 CALS per day and am losing 1.5 or so oer week which is good but have stalled once and gained a lb last week!

I know I should be happy and am most if time but am afraid that I can eat so much! No dumping just heart pounding if i eat too fast. have not really gotten much from Doc other than "you're one of those who have to measure since you can't feel your pouch..."

Past history: had a lap band almost 3 yrs ago started at 284 and lost 125. Then a recurring hiateal hernia recurred big time. Horrible horrible acid reflux 24/7. Gained back 75 lbs because I ate satisfying slider foods.

Doc took out band fixed hernia but hernia was back a month later. Let things heal then RNY w/ hernia fix in December. No more acid reflux thank God!

Lots of that hernia history probably responsible for not feeling pouch.as I mentioned I have not really gotten much from Doc other than "you're one of those who have to measure since you can't feel your pouch...."

I can't "feel" my pouch I don't guess but I hurt or tighten in my chest when I am full.. Does that count as feeling your pouch?

I'm with you Greenize. I feel the pouch pain when I eat more than a half cup or a half cup too quickly.

I can def eat more than 1/2 cup...I can prob eat more like 1.5 cups. Nothing but beef bothers me....I haven't tried sugar though. I had surgery 12/17/13 and I've lost 110 lbs since surgery. My worst problem is Hair loss. I've prob lost 40% of my hair. Which I am praying will come back soon. I often wonder if I'm doing things right. My doc office doesn't give much direction for after. This is def not easy. I weighed a lot more than you guys to start with tho....and I hear the more you are, the faster you lose.

My NUT says to eat a half cup at a time, without drinking liquids, and up to two cups a sitting. I'm supposed to do this on a 2-3-2 schedule, which means six meals a day, the first within two hours of waking, then every three hours, with the last no less than two hours before bedtime. I'm supposed to drink Water throughout the day, no less than two liters per day. I'm finding that I have to drink most of my Protein because I can't tolerate much meat.< /p>

I hope this helps.

Also I had my surgery 12/10/13. And I've lost 75 pounds so far. My NUT and doc and ARNP all tell me I could quit losing now. But I'm going to follow the program and see if I can get to a normal weight instead of the overweight range I'm currently in.

I have lost 86 lbs but I still want to lose about 50 to 60 more. I cannot eat things like steak, pork chops things like that. I can now tolerate ground beef, beef tips with a lot of juice etc,,, I have a hard time getting my Protein in daily and I have a little Hair loss but I didn't have a lot to begin with so I hope I don't lose more. I have had to learn not to eat too fast because I will get sick so I am doing much better with that.

My surgery was 12-21-13. I lost a lot of hair last month but it seems to have stopped. No way I could eat the amount of Protein I'm supposed to. I have to make a protein smoothie with Greek yogurt, fruit and Protein Powder, then still have to eat a Protein Bar daily. Most of the time I don't want to eat much at all. Drinking is ok, just have to remember to do it. I've lost around 85 lbs...about 10 more and I'll be in a normal weight range. It's been hard, no way around it. But the benefits are so good. My health problems have almost disappeared...I would do it all over again.

Totally agree that I wished I would've done it sonnet also. My wanting something to eat comes and goes. It seems like some days I can eat more than other days. Today was one of those days where I could care less if I ate or not.

It is nice to read people are still support each other on here. I also agree with all of you that this surgery is amazing but not easy. Summer is here and now more challenges of missing the bbq burgers and all that good food that goes with it. The one thing that keeps me feeling great is knowing how much I have lost and how great I feel so that makes the mind not feel so depressed when I see people eating all that fattening food. Reading all your posts makes me so proud of everyone on here and all that we have all gone through and all that we will go through for the rest of our lives. Congrats to all of you for the great decisions we have made to make our lives for the better.

Our surgeries were around the same time. I'm down 102, but have easily lost half my hair. My doc and nut say its normal, at it's peak now and should subside by 9 months out. I hope so...I'll have nothing left! They did tell me to increase my Protein to 70g per day and make sure I take my Vitamins (I do!). So I guess only time will tell...

How is everyone ? We all seem to be in our own little worlds now! I am at 97 lbs down but I think I am losing in inches now! I can tolerate chicken and some ground beef at this stage!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
