So I am 31 and have been overweight my entire life, for that reason I have never had my period. I just always thought lucky me and never really gave it a second thought. Well here I am 5 weeks post op down 39 pounds, getting my first period. I am not going to lie I freaked out a little, I called my mom and my sister lol. I have to say I knew I might get my period after I lost a lot of weight, but 39lbs isn't that much and I have recently been at this weight and never had my period. Has anyone else had this happen? Oh and periods suck! I could never relate before now all I can say is I am so sorry!!!

39 lbs. may not seem like a lot to you right now, but it's more than 10% of your body weight lost. That is significant. I have read lots of posts here where menstrual cycles started again (if they had stopped due to weight gain) or became more regular. My cycle was not the most reliable pre-op. After about 2 months, it is like clockwork.

As with anything that dramatically changes, check with your doctor and let them know what is going on just to be on the safe side.

I'm sorry! They're not fun.

I do have this kind of amusing mental scene playing out of you calling your mother in the middle of the night and saying, "I'm dying! I'm bleeding. WHAT IS THIS?"

I'm warped. Don't mind me.

For some reason surgery seems to bring out the periods in all of us. I hadnt had mine for over a year and then I did. A lot of girls have experienced this. Welcome ;)

Thank you for the perspective! I never thought of my weight loss like that. 10% does feel more impressive :-). I never thought to talk to my doctor, but it makes sense too because I have been diagnosed with primary amenoria. I knew this was the place for advice!

People have been congratulating me (the few who know) and telling me about all the babies I should have now lol. I did call my mom but it was in the middle of the day and the convo went something like "MOM! I don't know what's wrong with me but I have been really mean to my husband for 3 days and now I am bleeding a lot!" "Sounds like you need to go to the store and get some midol and some maxi pads sweetie."

As you lose weight hormones are released from the stored fat and this has probably contributed to your period in connection with losing the 39 pounds. Great job! :)

I was so bummed to see my period resurface a year and a half after having uterine ablation. I was so thrilled that the ablation stopped the bleeding completely. In fact, I haven't been able to tell the doctors when my last period was because I never really know. Well, that has all changed, dammit! I have lost 42 lbs. and have bled for the full 5 days this week! Fortunately, it was light but disappointing since I have enjoyed its absence tremendously. Just a small price to pay for feeling so much better after losing the first 42lbs. Can't wait for the next 42 lbs. to drop! Keep up the great work :)

OH GOOD GOD! I had a uterine ablation 3 years ago and haven't had a period since then! I had no idea it could come back. Please, please, please let this not be the case for me. I'm SO sorry for you!

My period came back after an ablation...sorry you're going through that..I finally ended up with a hysterectomy, but I was already 44 at the time.

Mine hasn't come back as of yet. I was responding to BerryChicks post that hers has after a uterine ablation. I had a uterine ablation 3 years ago and I would be TICKED OFF if mine came back, lol.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
