Uhc - Not Covered?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, first time poster here!

I'm a 21 year old female, and overweight... I was interested in doing the surgery after I saw the results a friend of mine had. He recommended his surgeon, which happens to be an in-network surgeon of UHC. I called the insurance company, and they said that this surgery wasn't covered... is that possible? UHC has an 'Estimate Health Care Costs' link, and I put in all my information, and according to that, they do... I'll I'd have to pay is $2,000 out-of-pocket.

I have insurance through my job, PetSmart.

Any suggestions on what I should do?

Some employers insurance plans do not cover it. To be safe I would call again and speak with someone else. Maybe that person was incorrect (goodness knows we don't always get the correct information when we call). You might want to bring up the link you put your information into and ask them why it says you are covered. Good luck!!

Althought UHC does cover Weight Loss Procedures each policy is different. Bariatric Surgery is usually an additional add on the policy that employers choose to add to the traditional policy. If they have told you that it is an exclusion this means that the rider is not on your policy and unfortunately there is no way around that.

They didn't say it was an exclusion, they just said they didn't cover it. Maybe there is a way around it...hm.

PetSmart's insurance policy does not include weight loss surgery. I work for them also and I'm in the same boat. I'm looking into financing or self pay. Good Luck.

Yes, just because you have United does not mean the will or won't cover. It totally depends on the policy you have, of which United has 1,000's of different ones for different groups and employers.

My husbands company had United and the plan specifically excluded any bariatric surgery, but my girlfriends work did cover it with a $3,000 co-pay.

Your best bet is to get a copy of your plan benefit documents as well as the exclusion list from HR. That will outline everything. The people on the phone deal with 1,000's of plans.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
