Could It Be Emotional Detox?

Recommended Posts

Hello. I have this theory about all the emotional ups and downs we go through as we lose weight. I work in the field of energy work (acupuncture, energy psychology) and I see it from that perspective. What if a lot of our craziness that we go through when we release the excess weight is emotions stored in the fat cells? In Eastern Medicine we feel that the body holds memories such as traumas and emotions. It makes a lot of sense to me that as we shed the fat, that all the emotions we stored in the fat while we ate under stressful, emotional and traumatic times are released. When I acknowledge that this is happening, it helps me to understand the emotional pain that is coming up to be released. It is so much easier for me when I don't feel like "There must be something wrong with me." or " Am I crazy?" Sure, there are other reasons for the emotions that arise during weight loss; blood sugar issues, hormones, etc., but the energy of whatever we were stuffing being released as the fat is released makes a lot of sense to me too. It helps to know we aren't crazy when things feel so intense, and that it will pass. (no pun intended) Can anyone relate to this too?

Totally and you are right food is " energy" ... That energy is expressed in how it's treated, grown, handled. We bring in that energy. No longer eating that food we detox, both physiologically and energetically. I think that is one if the reasons why after surgery, or possibly before, we feel so much better because we are no longer taking in negative energy

Very true. Good points. And the reasons we feel bad as we lose the weight is the negative energy is leaving. I think if we eat good, healthy food when we need to eat and with gratitude it changes everything. Thanks for the insight Peggy.

We'll, estrogen is stored in your fat cells and is released as you burn fat. Estrogen creates so many of our emotions. So I definitely see that part of it.

I don't feel bad when I lose weight. I feel fantastic. For me, once my body is burning the energy it has stored as fat, I become full of energy, positive, excited to work out etc. I am sorry, but I don't relate to your theory. It isn't how it works for me.

Edited to add:

The first three days of any detox from sugar feels awful though I am more in line with believing this is to do with the physiological addiction of sugar and the three day detox required to break this physiological addiction does suck. I don't think that is emotions in my fat though, more just the physiological withdrawal from the sugar. After day three, I am and have always been good to go. From then on, as long as I avoid the sugar, I am happy losing weight.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
