1 Week out - Tired & Confused

Recommended Posts

I am 46 yrs old and exactly 1 week out from the sleeve surgery as of today. I'm just so confused by the people that say they are doing great. Everything seemed to be on track until this past Sunday - then I just lost all energy and have been dragging ever since. First of all - I am not sure how slow I should be "eating". I seem to get a lot of bloating & pain and i have no trouble whatsoever with Constipation - just the opposite. I read about dumping, so I started setting a timer to sip drink 1 oz of my shake every 15 min during my 2 hour mealtimes instead of just sipping without smaller goals because frankly I could stop at 2 oz easily. I am doing this but still feel bloated & sore in my upper abdominal area when I'm drinking I eating. Also I just know once I take my nightly Nexium dose I'll once again have to rush to the bathroom. Any suggestions on how to feel better and not have dumping issues? I set a bunch of re-occurring timers today to make sure I get my Water, Protein & meds in but I am behind on all because I woke up late this AM (actually after 12) Anyone else have trouble catching up when they get behind? The only way I can see to stay on track is get up at 7 AM every day and go to bed @ 10 PM but I am so so sooo not a morning person. I also started my menses cycle today - anyone else have to deal with that 1 week out? I don't know how much I'm feeling can be blamed on that or the surgery.

PS: I am so sick of sweet Protein Shakes already, suggestions?

It takes time.... You will get your energy back. It was at least six weeks for me. Your body is going through major changes right now. RELAX and take a deep breath. My surgeon said to shoot for 64 oz of liquids a day. I struggled the first month to accomplish that goal. As the swelling goes down it will get easier. I couldn't get my plumbing to work so I honestly have no answers concerning that. I do wish you all the best. Life does get less uncomfortable and confusing. Hang in there!

Thanks - I got up @ 7 this AM, even though I didn't get to sleep until after 3. I am 1 swallow away from finishing my first 8 oz of Protein and and feeling better than yesterday. I drank a lot more Water last night.

T'newstart, I too felt awful and tired for about 12 days post surgery. It was rough. WHen I saw my Dr he said most people are fatigued for about 2 months. He also said relax try and get enough fluids, Protein. In the beginning I ate 2-3oz of greek yogurt every 2 hours. ate it over 10 mins rested 1/2 hour then ate again at the 2 hour mark. I added Unjury chicken Soup Protein Drink in for Fluid about the second week. It has 100 cals and 21 grams of protein. Only need 3 of those a day to get most of your protein. It was such a welcome non sweet protein. I love it to this day 2 months and 9 days post surgery. Try and remember everything taste bad after surgery. Right now you are adjusting and you may not be perfect for a while, but you will get there.

Thanks so much for the helpful info. I just had 4 oz of puréed, strained & watered down lentil Soup. That was pretty good. I have to remember to add the plain Protein to everything though. Forgot this time. I will try the Greek yogurt for my 4 PM snack.< /p>

Also... Trust your intuition and body. It could be something easy to fix, like mine was!!

When my energy dropped one week after, something just felt off.... It was not normal.... So I tracked myself... Getting fluids and Protein and sleep... Gave myself a B12 injection... That didn't fix it... TOOK AN Iron (didn't you say your cycle started??? You're losing Iron then.... I got my cycle a few days after as well... Many women do) supplement and within an hour I started to perk back up. This same lack of energy happened to me this past weekend and because of a bout of food poisoning, diarrhea and then leg cramps I though, I wonder if it's low potassium so I took a potassium supplement and AGAIN.. Within an hour I started to perk back up!

I had diarrhea constantly in the beginning. My dr had me take Imodium to stop it! You're losing all your fluids (of course you have no energy) if you aren't taking something like Imodium! I'm 5 months out and still need it once a week.

I'm ridiculously in tune with listening to the messages my body gives me. If in doubt always call your doctor. :)

Wishing you luck and healing vibes sweetheart!!!!!!

I am out 9 days and am struggling with the liquids. This may be a dumb question but does the Protein Shake count toward liquids?

I too find that endurance is an issue. But having 600 calories a day can be hard on your body.

Good luck everyone... One day at a time.

Yes Marie, your shakes count towards your liquids. No question is dumb. :) We've all wondered the sameeee things, I promise you.

Thanks so much. I have been making myself crazy trying to get all this Water in ...which I haven't succeeded at. I can now add to my mfp log.

If you are only 1 week out you are definitely still recovering from major surgery so its expected to be tired! Give yourself some time. Sounds like you are on the right track. I got my mensies 2 days after surgery and that will make you more tired also!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
