3 mos out. OMG! What have I done? Protein makes me nauseous

Recommended Posts

Some days, the thought of dense Protein makes me sick to my stomach!!

I wonder if it is normal at 3 months to feel, "OMG, what have I done? No more large meals, or excessive eating, or eating to relax, entertain, feel better?"

My little tummy is so small that I hardly get going on my meal when it is time to STOP! I'm having a hard time with that right now. I haven't been advanced yet to a normal diet. In 2 weeks I can have raw fruits and vegetables (FINALLY!). I hope that takes the nausea away. I secretly wonder, "OMG, what have I done? Dense protein at every meal? Gag..

Why do you have to wait 2 weeks. Why not try eating fruit now in very small bites.

As to Protein, there's so many kinds. Of course, there's Protein drinks ready made, Protein powder, eggs and eggbeaters that you can add to drinks. Lots of Meal Replacement bars, nuts, meat, shrimp, cheese ... the list goes on.

It doesn't have to be dense Protein at every meal. There's always things like tuna, egg salad, fish, etc. You'r e supposed to eat a healthy diet. Small bites of a variety of foods.

Yep, that's right.

The alternative is healthier meals, eating for nourishment, exercising or (insert favorite hobby here) to relax or feel better, socializing when entertaining, less worries about heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes. Healthier joints, no back pain, longer life, cuter clothes, fitter body, ability to move and dance and climb and run and jump and hike and do all the things that are OH SO FREAKING HARD TO DO when you are 50, 60, 100, 150 pounds overweight.

AND? You look and feel great while you are doing it.

WIN!!!!!

I had a lot of difficulty eating for my first 4 months. In fact, at 5.5 months, food still gets stuck, I still throw up after a few bites once in awhile, and I've yet to get in my Protein. I am fairly certain that I have a minor stricture and should get my esophagus stretched but I am not going to because while I want to eat mentally, physically I don't need to eat more than I am.

I still have moments of dread about Protein, but I suck it up and do what I have to do. When I just can't, I have a few wheat crackers and some Peanut Butter or cream cheese and call it a day. I have found fall back foods like Jerky, almonds, babybel cheeses, hummus, greek yogurt based dips, etc. when I just can't stomach the thought of meat of any kind. (I cannot eat poultry, it makes me vomit since my sleeve so I am stuck with pork, seafood and beef for now.)

All that said, it gets a bit better each week. I am also down 85 freaking pounds. I was a snug size 20 with a 2x top. I am now a snug size 12 with a large top. (Snug 12s look good, snug 20s do not.) My bra size dropped from a 44DD to a 36DD. My exercise clothes are now medium and large and I can use them for more than just holding down the couch.

food is no longer the center of my life, but more of an afterthought because I do still get hungry physically. My mental hunger has dulled down to a whisper but it still rears it's ugly head around that time of the month. It can be squashed a lot faster now and my inside voice no longer rules my life. It's AMAZING.

It's all good, I am not complaining, so graceful for having this tool to lose weight!,

I hate that for you. I am so lucky not to experience this but I know many people who have. Can you imagine how much it would be as you get older with all the excessive weight piled on top? YIKES!

I hope you find relief!

I am 6 weeks out and can eat almost anything. I would rather have a "taste" of something I like than to have the alternative of one foot in the grave! You will find out as you go along what you can eat and what you can not eat. I found premier shakes at Sam's club, they have 30g. of Protein. One is almost half of my protein needs for the day. I too would use food to "relax" I have made myself find other things to do. Maybe you could take up a hobby. I make jewelry now and I also joined a local gym that is through our hospital. I plug in my ipod with the oldies on it and even music helps me relax. Good Luck!

K33 I hear you about wrapping your brain around the tiny meals......some days 3 bites are it.....and on those days I can be heard muttering something like "Are you kidding me? Seriously?!?"

But it only takes a few seconds to shake it......the benefits of this surgery are totally worth it for me......I am happy with the weight loss, how I look, how I feel, the extra energy, not to mention the sex is great (TMI? sorry).......and hubby is happy, too.....the woman he married is back.

I don't have any dietary restrictions....I make a crockpot meal each week, portion it out and freeze it---always have a variety of meals in the freezer in VSG sized portions to choose from, and the Protein is nice and moist.......I eat slow and my meals are tiny, but to reach my Protein goals, I have to drink a Protein Drink for Breakfast.

Good luck, HTH!

You are all awesome, each with your own spin and wisdom on my topic. Tanx.

One question, is it safe to eat raw Egg beaters in Protein drinks?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
