I am a Pharmacist and I sit most of the day 2 weeks was just right. I'd say you will need 3 weeks unless u get a return to work with lifting restrictions/light duty.

Thanks for your reply. My only problem is I've only been given 1 week off & that's for the rest of the year... Will our surgeons write a medical certificate to ensure the extra week off from work? It's so complicated. Especially in my work environment, if I went back on light duties, I would have a million questions asked as to why I needed it.. Plus they all gossip!

Ok cool, thanks. I know my manager won't be too happy with me if I take off a whole extra week. But it's my health & I would hate to cause myself avoidable complications.. Thanks for the advice :)

I went back after 5 days, but my job is not at all physically demanding. After being sleeved you can't lift more than 10lbs. for about 6 weeks. You definitely don't want to risk your health. Any chance you can talk to your manager and without giving all your details, let them know that you are having a procedure that will require you to be on light duty. There are tons of procedures that could fit the bill here, not just bariatric surgery. You can protect your privacy and your health.

What kind of nurse are you? Is light duty even an option? Do you get breaks? We had a thread about this over the weekend, which made me decide that the 4 weeks I arranged is probably not enough and I'll probably take 6. (We have FMLA insurance so I can do this.) I had a band to sleeve and I am in my 50s, things that I think are making me bounce back more slowly than I had expected. So maybe think about how it would go if you did need more time. BTW, you are not responsible for your manager's happiness, if you need surgery, have a baby, whatever, it's her/his responsibility to deal with it.

I work in healthcare as well, physical therapist assistant. Personally, I have to take off 7-8 weeks. My surgeon has a 5lb lifting restriction for 8 weeks. I explained I can not work with a lifting restriction and she agreed that she may let me go back a bit earlier depending on my status at my 6 week follow up. I am taking two weeks of sick/personal time, then the rest is short term disability. I am now two weeks post op, and even though I am bored at home and would love to be back at work, I know I could not handle my usual work load. There is no "light duty" in the nursing facility setting for me. I am sure if you go back after 2 weeks you will certainly be on light duty.

I'm a Dental Assistant, I thought I could return after 1 week but I took two weeks and I am so glad I did. I had a very easy time with surgery able to get all my fluids in and still needed two weeks. It gives you time to get in the routine with you fluids. Good luck

I went back after 3 days off and I wasn't given any lifting restrictions. I'm up and down and walk a lot with my job.

I talked to human resources and they gave me FMLA for 4 weeks and I didn't have to tell my dept why. So talk to someone in HR

Have you been on your job for greater than 12 months? If so, FMLA will guarantee your job. They cannot ask you what you're having done either. That is a federal law. Now you may not get paid for all the time off depending on if u have short term disability insurance. If u don't try to stay home as long as you can possibly afford to. Your surgeon should be able to give you a notice for up to 8 weeks. Stop talking to your direct supervisor and start talking to HR! There are laws to protect you.

It totally depends on u... I tried going back to school 2 weeks after surgery and I couldn't do it... I didn't get time to drink Water all day and the next day I felt so ill because I was getting constant head spins... I decided to take a break from school until I know how to use the sleeve properly ... also it's been 3 weeks since my surgery and today I have extreme stomach pain... so everyday u will feel different... of all depends on ur body

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
