Pleas add me to the list! Surgery date 12/2 at JFK medical center in Edison, nj with dr. Abkin!!! So excited. Final pre-op class tomorrow and then just waiting! I'm so anxious (in a good way)...it has been scheduled since August! I just want to move on! Sick of being so heavy! I'm 5'4 300. Would I love to be around 150 (not sure how realistic that is)! So happy to meet so many great and inspiring people on here!

Hey December Sleevers!

I just received my approval last week and my surgery date is December 16th!!!! My process went faster than expected. It took about two months to get all my requirements done: Family doctor approval, Nutritionist appointment, and one psych eval. Have BCBS of IL. Im 27yrs old, 5'8 @274lbs. Ive always had a problem with my weight so im super excited for my day to come. Have you guys been apprehensive about telling people? I've had to stop since I keep getting all negative feedback.

I have BCBS of NY and they approved me on the first call from my surgeons office. I am so happy I choose them last year! Best of luck to you :)

Sorry you have gotten negative feedback! have told my family, closest friends and fellow supervisors where I work. Nothing but support. Lots of questions too! I supervise a department of 13 people and I was not comfortable telling them. It was a very personal decision. They are younger then me, skinny, and gossipy besides I'm just not close to any of them so I felt they did not need to know. All they know is I am having a medical procedure and I will be out for a few weeks. They will be able to figure it out! Outside of work I have been very open about it!

Hey December Sleevers!

Welcome WhittyWoman - I have you on the list for December 16. Congratulations on getting your date.

I, too, have always had a problem with my weight, so I don't actually know what it's like to wear 'normal' size clothes, so I am really looking forward to that. You asked about being apprehensive about telling people. It's for the very reason that you stopped telling people that I haven't told very many people. No one in my family (except for my husband, of course) knows....they have been the most critical and judgmental about my weight in my entire life...so I have purposely kept this from them until later down the line. (I live several states away from them, and only see them twice a year, so by the next time they see me after the surgery, THEN we can have a discussion about it.)

I have told just a few close friends (and was quite apprehensive doing so...I honestly hadn't planned on telling anyone), but I needed to make sure I had a back up in the event that my husband was traveling during my surgery, so I told my most trusted girlfriend, and a few friends from my church group...but have sworn them all to secrecy. Only one person that I know personally knows about my blog, and I have not told anyone else about it...it's one of those things where I feel like this is going to be MY personal victory, I am winning this fight I have fought for so many years, and I'm just not going to have the naysayers bring me down while I do it. :)

So many people have so many different experiences...some have incredible support and love, and others just get negativity and judgment. This is OUR time...this is OUR journey! (I feel like I should have "The Eye of the Tiger" playing in the background)

Again, congratulations and welcome to the group!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
