caloric intake

Recommended Posts

So, I know this varies from person to person, for obvious reasons... But I started seeing a trainer to work on losing the last of this weight and improve my triathlon times for next season, and he had me up my calories to 1000-1200 a day (all clean eating, and broken into portions no more than 8oz throughout the day) but going from eating about 800-900 when my band in the earlier stages (Im only a year and half out, but it feels like forever now ha) to 1200 feels like a LOT. I had some Fluid removed a while ago and and having a fill next week and hoping with the small portions and food choices I can still get in the calories needed with some restriction (now I'm basically going entirely by weighing everything, which I have to do for training anyways). I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else has had the same concerns (eating too many calories) as they increase their fitness levels- turns out you can't eat 800 calories and workout 2x a day haha

I am NO WHERE NEAR where you are physically, and I am only seven weeks post-op, but I just had the same thing happen. My nutritionist at first wanted me to hit about 800 calories a day. I just saw her last night and we talked about my excercise routine. I told her I've been walking 2 miles 5 days a week and had just started some weights. She said that my body literally needed more fuel, and wants me to consume 1100 calories a day now. When I told her that number scared me, she said that she was afraid of me continuing to exercise on 800 calories a day and not having enough fuel for my body to replenish itself. So that's where I am now.

And you are a super-duper-athlete, so I'm sure you need more calories even more than I do!

Awesome job! Right now my goal is to run a 5K in the spring. It will be my first. But you gotta start somewhere!!

Have those extra calories come from Protein. Thats what your body needs if you're exercising more. And really you might just add an after workout shake and be pretty close to getting the calories in.

Very good to hear! The number just sounds to scary hah!

And hey, my first 5k was last December, so keep at it!!! (And can I just say how insane it is to hear the word "athlete" describe you after being overweight for so long!)

When I was eating less than 1000 calories a day, my weight loss stalled considerably. I increased my calories to 1200 a day and it definitely became quicker and more consistent.

Sometimes our metabolism needs more food to lose. I know it sounds crazy, but if you're eating too little it can make your metabolism sluggish. Considering your strenuous work out schedule, I'd be willing to bet the calorie increase is necessary.

Good luck!

We are all different but I work out very hard 7 days a wk ( in training for marathon) if I have less than 1000 calories a day my workout suffers noticeably. . Right now I stay about 1,100 a day and for ME that works

In my case, it all depended upon how much energy I had stored away as fat.....I would work out on a empty stomach, and eat very few calories during the day..probably around 800 calories, wherre one good run can burn well over 600...(I never know for sure because I never count) and probably burned more than I consumed on any given day...

But now that my Body Fat % is in the "Fit" range, and I have no fat or weight left to loose, I need something to eat..even if it's a pure liquid Protein shot, before I do my runs....(which I do take...30ml)

I run 5 miles a day, 5 days a week, then weights, and attend advance group fitness classes...(Core, boot camp, body pump, etc) And there are days I can't sit still because my energy levels are so high, I'll go back to the gym after work, before eating dinner....so at times I do get 2 workouts a day with very few calories...

Marathoners will have Pasta bashes before the day of a race...but they're not trying to loose weight, and are already skinny as a rail with no stored fat to burn....

One thing about trainers, diet guru's, along with their App's....they do not understand life with the Lap band and always want to apply traditional standards....IMO, I am very un-traditional....most times I throw all logic out the window and stick with what works best for me....then change up as I change...

There are a few NUTS I work with at one of the Hospitals, and they always want to "Go by the book" not by the case presented before them...

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
