getting banded in Feb?

Recommended Posts

I being banded this Friday and I am also a nurse. The closer it gets the more scared I become. It difficult being the patient this time. I don't want to be sick with side effects from the procedure. But I am trying to keep in mind that there may be side effects but they will probably be temporary. Good luck Friday!

Hi,

I will be banded this friday, and I am so nervous!!!!!!!!! I am a nurse, and have been in the OR thousands of times, but never as the patient. Maybe nervous isn't the right word, I am scared. Your definately not alone in being nervous. I'll let you know how it goes. Hopefully once I check in I will be calmer.

:nervous I was banded on Friday, Feb.9th by Dr. Ortiz in Mexico. Let me tell you ALL that this was a great experience. The people at the clinic are wonderful and Dr. Ortiz is superb!!! If you are a self pay, please do not hesitate to check out www.obesitycontrolcenter.com The total cost was $8500.

I am back at work today and feel great! I have no gas pains in my shoulder the some people experienced. My port site is a little bit sore while sitting down for long period but nothing I can't deal with. I am so excited that everything went so well!

There were five other people getting surgery the same day as me and all of them said only great things about the experience too. We all became really close and enjoyed eachother's company while in Mexico.

I'm finally banded on I am doing fine on the post op diet. Right now I am drinking broth and Crystal Light. I have eaten popcicles and I feel great. Sitting in the airport was a little bit tough with all the food aroma but that was all mental hunger. I am learning to beat those urges with my new band in place.

The future is bright!!!!:clap2:

Thanks Tres Chic for the encouragement! I hope all will go well. I meet with my surgeon next Monday -- so far nothing was said about a pre-op diet but she may give me more info. I will be good to feel better.

Keep me posted all of you who are being banded in Feb -- let me know how you feel, etc. I'll let everyone know about me as well.

Thanks again!

Hi DooneyJC and nursedeeva,

I am back from Mexico. Surgery went great, actually the whole expericence was good. I did start crying at the admisions desk, but as soon as I was in pre-op, the anesthesiologist gave me something and I was totally relaxed. I was up and walking within an hour of leaving recovery. That helps tremendously with the gas pains. The x-ray contrast gave me diarrhea, on Saturday, but other than that all is well.

I am actually at work today (sitting at a desk). I can't wait until I can roll over in bed and be comfortable, but other than that I don't have many complaints. Oh, the heating pad was a good investment!

I am hoping that I wasn't the typical hard patient that nurses can be. I am pretty sure I was much better than when I had my son!!!!

let me know how you two are doing.

Hi I am suppose to get banded on feb. 23rd, I to my last meeting with the surgeon yesturday, and to my surprise he was pushing me towards having a gastric bypass instead of the lap band. I have been researching the lap band for months and know that it is the way to go, especially after reading the posts from this forum. I think that because my surgeon has done thousands of gastric bypasses, and only a handful of lap bands, that he feels that the bypass is the way to go. He told me that he hasn't had good results in the lapband but would still do it. I have been praying and feel that maybe the proceedure is what I still should stick with but find a doctor with more lap band experience and have been checking out a doctor from tenessee. I would like to get someone else's feed back. Thanks Gretchen

Kelsy,

Just finally checking in after my surgery Monday moning. Funny, I thought I'd be on line much earlier than now. I wasn't too nervous though, kind of low key, a little depressed that I had to go this route. I think people think you're not a strong person if you can't loose weight the old fashioned way. Just started feeling sorry for myself more than being nervous.

All done though, and it certainly isn't an easy road, no matter what anyone says. I'm sure it will be much easier to talk about in a week or so. How are you feeling? I also had a Hiatal Hernia repair done (un-expected), so a few more stitches and a little more pain. Hope things are well with you and you're enjoying your Jell-o as much as me.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
