Gastric Bypass Way More Dangerous...

Recommended Posts

...then the sleeve?! I just finished seeing my surgeon and he scared the crap out of me!!! He says that the sleeve and bypass have the same results except the bypass has a higher risk with complications. :( I know it does, but he just made it sound so scary. My heart was set on gastic bypass, but now I'm just so confused!!

My surgeon said nothing like that. He said that the risk of complication is about 1.5% with the sleeve and 2-2.5% with the bypass. Also, the results are not the same. Typically more weight is lost with the bypass.

Yeah, I was orginally going to get the sleeve but you cannot undoe the sleeve; they totally remove the stomach.... You can put the stomach back together with the bypass. Not easy but can be done...

Welll, my doctor told me that the sleeve has more leaking complications than the gatric bypass but overall they both have the same risks for the most part. He said he was always more comfortable with the bypass because it's been around 30+ years where the sleeve has only been around here for like8 years. I was going to go withthe sleeve but after talking to my doc he convinced me to go with the bypass. I think it was the right decision for me. I hope this helps. :)

I had decided if I was going to do any surgery what so ever it would be the procedure that I would lose the most weight which is the bypass. There are risks in ANY surgery, the majority of people have no major issues what so every with the bypass and many, many people go from band to bypass.

My surgeon also said more risk for leakage with sleeve and that he's more confident in RNY since its been around so much longer.

My surgeon also said there are more complications of leaking or bleeding with the sleeve and that, that surgery hasn't been around as long as the bypass as far as history. She recommends bypass over the sleeve stating bypass has a better success rate weight loss wise. I wasn't sure if I wanted the sleeve or bypass either....I had already had the lapband and had it removed 4 years after it was put in. I didn't want to have to go through another surgery...I had to choose the surgery that would help me lose the most and had the best history so far. Bypass was it for me.

Good luck with your decision. You'll hear lots of opinions but, the best opinion is your own. Do your research, read lots of studies and research some more. Knowledge is your friend in this decision.

I’d have to ask him or her which he or her has performed more of - what are his or her stats - how many have they done - what success stories can they share - might be that your surgeon is biased because of experience - imho.

My surgeon's group won't even perform the sleeve due to increased risk of complications & leakage. They just do bypass and lapband and prefer bypass if you're going to have WLS due to greater success. A woman in my support group went to another hospital and had the sleeve and they ended up taking out her spleen too because the dr nicked it during the surgery. Now she has to deal with life without a spleen and take extra precautions to prevent infections. She's lost 50 lbs after 3 months but has a complication that will always be a concern. Surgery is always a risk, you just have to decide which procedure is right for youi because you are the one who has to live with it.

My Center of Excellance stated that they risks are about the same with bypass and the sleeve when done properly. The issue with the sleeve is that it is a lot newer so surgeons have less practice. Like a few have stated, I wanted the risk pf dumping since I am a HUGE sweet and carb lover. So, I think it is what suits the individual needs of the patient.

My surgeon told me basically the same thing about Sleeve vs Bypass. The complications were about the same and would have better results with RNY.

I was also told that complications with the bypass are more likely to show up while I am still in the hospital but that with the sleeve, the complications can arise several weeks after surgery. So that was another factor in favor of bypass in my opinion.

There can be serious complications with all the surgeries. The bypass is my preference because the results are the best. And many people who had the band or sleeve end up converting to the bypass later on.

My wife had lapband about 1.5 months ago. I just had the RNY. She now wishes that she had done RNY like me. I told her I went RNY because Im not going back into another surgery again! So the first time would be my last.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
