Thanks Bigdaddynomo for the response. Follow-on question if I may, how is it that I can not drink and keep down two ounces of Water but I am suppose to be anle to eat 5 ounces of food? I guess i still do not understand how the pouch works.

Thanks

Dave

I still have trouble with Water or liquids when I gulp to much or too fast. They will come back up. It seems like it is a reflex action of the esophogus(sic) to bring it back up when you over do it. The pouch is only like a little bigger than a golf ball and my doctor wants to tighten it so that even with liquids the Fluid has to sit there for a second or two and then it drains through. One thing that bugs me is that I don't get a good full feeling before I get into trouble and have to PB.

Guys - so I had my preop appointment and everything was fine - now i have this sinking feeling like "what the F*%K are you doing man?" Im not scared of the surgery but all of a sudden any hesitation i had before that has long since passed from my thoughts is back. I suspect that this is normal but I am really starting to feel aprehensive about all of this. I think it stems from me lurking on other threads in this board about people who fail at the band, have complications etc. I have to keep telling my self that these naysayers and neardowells are a result of not following the rules etc.

so i have some questions for you guys

1. how many times have you puked (pb and the chicas like to call it)

2. is it a common occurance?

3. logic tells me that if it happens once you know what caused it, so why are these people continuously puking/sliming etc.

Please share your experiences good and bad. Let me know if you would ever have the sugery again etc.

On a different note - Got another 2 miles in doing a half-a-loop on the course. Shot a 39!!!! Sure hope losing weight only improves my swing!!!

Hi Bigdaddynomo, I do not feel full either, I feel a lump after eating too fast or not chewing well enough. When I feel this lump I usually end up with a BP. I then go back and eat some more but of course I do not have good restriction at this time however.

Is this how it will be in the future? I will eat until I feel the lump, BP and stop eating? Is the food that I bring up actually from the pouch or is it the food that will not fit in the pouch?

Thanks

bigsexy- Your feelings are normal. I remember laying there before going into surgery thinking, "Jeeze, I volunteered for this??". Then the wanting to lose overpowered these thoughts. After surgery, I have not looked back.

On PBing or throwing up, I've done it twice. Both times eating some smoked salmon. It was a little dry. It's not a big deal, I did it once while talking business on the phone, didn't skip a beat. My wife, on the other hand, has had some problems learning to quit fighting the band. I think you will have no problem with throwing up if you:

1. Eat small pieces, chew, and eat slow. Set your fork down after taking a bite for maybe 30 seconds. Force yourself to not "Dig In".

2. Stay clear of tough, dry meats. If your going to have a steak, eat a filet mignon or rib steak. Fish for the most part is friendly. Dark chicken is OK. Dry meats need a little help. I make a low carb/low calorie sauce. I use 1 carb ketchup with some garlic power, chili powder, onion powder, etc to doctor it up.

3. Some foods will cause problems (sticky rice, bread, Buns, pasta). This is trial and error. I can eat a little toasted bread once in a while. Maybe the bottom half of the bun on a burger (can't eat the whole thing anyway).

4. Learn from your mistakes.

I'm sure others can add more and I hope they do.

As far as words of encouragement, that is something you have to decide. You have to decide if you want to lose back enough to change your lifestyle. I think MOST of the people having problems aren't really committed to do what it takes to lose weight. It's not a quick fix. It's not the easy way out. It will require you to pay attention to your food intake and exercise. But the band will help you along the way.

Good luck!

Bruce

Brewha - thanks for the words of encouragement.

I am committed at least I believe I am. There is nothing in the world more important to me than being around for my son in the future. Weight is the only thing that is keeping me from that.

I just need to focus and get my sh*t together here. I do know that it is not just a magic pill or a quick sprint to the finish line and this is a major sacrifice. I am motivated but I guess i just need more support that i ever expected. Probably why I am here so much. I have never relied on others before for much of anything so this is all new too. My wife doesn't really get what is going to be involved with the lifestyle change, despite me giving her all the readings and support information. So I don't expect to count on her for much of my support. I'm looking forward to my new life and I hope that I will have as much success as the rest of you guys. I welcome others comments as well and will provide feedback when I can as well

keep up the good work

I don't regret anything. In fact I keep telling myself that when I PB or slime that is just one more reminder that I have to slow down and chew my food. That is how the bands work and we were pretty out of control with eating. I see my son who is 16 doing the same bad habits. About PB's they are not as bad a a real puke...no acid or digested food. It just kinda comes up and you spit it out. You and control when it happens which happens to be just enough time to walk to the bathroom. As for the golf swing my game is better than ever so you have a lot to look forward too. Don't worry.

I think re-learning how to eat slow and eat small bites and give yourself time between bites is the answer. Our eating habits were developed, in my case, over 54 years of eat quick, eat everything, and just eating because whatever it is tastes good. Its the behavior modification that will be the key and the band keeps giving you that reminder. My worry is that if I PB too much then I'm risking a slip or erosion. The doctor says the new way they anchor the band to the stomach has greatly reduced the chances of that but if you don't minimize those occurences of PB then your risk goes up. I'm getting better at doing all these things.

Hey guys - just checkin in to see how everyone is doing. it is funny one day i will be totally geeked about the surgery the next day is spent wondering if i am going to leave my son fatherless. I sware to god i am just being a f'ing pussy these days. What the hell.

Sorry for the vent - on a different note - got another 36 holes walking done this weekend. Played a Gary Player and a Trent Jones course. The player one was rediculously hilly. Normally they require a cart but it was not crowded so they let me walk - Even 100lbs thinner and that would have sucked.

Okay gents- no longer being a puss. Got my sh*t together, got out and exercised, now i cannot wait for the 27th. I did a full day of liquid yesterday w/o issue. Gave up my massive amt of diet coke cold turkey too. Asside from a bit of a caffiene headache I haven't been too bad.

Hope you all are doing well - i'm taking a much needed break tonight and going to fenway to watch the game. Take it easy

Atta boy- it gets easier after a couple days. I really enjoyed the way the weight came off when I was on liquids.

I've started some cardio on my recumbant bicycle on a regular basis. I try to do it every other day. Us old farts gotta start slow...

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
