Beginning My Gastric Bypass Journey...first Visit Tomorrow

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I had LapBand surgery in February 2006, revision surgery due to a slip in December 2008 and it ended with my band being removed in emergency surgery in February 2010. I couldn't revise to RNY then because my stomach was too inflamed. I went through an array of emotions the entire journey with my lapband and even more so after it was removed. I was relieved then depressed and what a cycle it was. I've tried yet again to diet after I regained confidence enough to try but, just like always in the end I've gained the weight I lost. I did great with my band, losing 80 pounds the first year and even with all the trouble at least I could keep it off. I have to face the fact I need help in losing and keeping it off. I started researching RNY again and now 1.5 years from losing my band I'm ready to make the move.

Tomorrow is a day full of visits to the bariatric center that I went to for my LapBand. I'm seeing a nurse to start the process, bloodwork, Medical Director for an exam, Nutritionist and Social Worker..together they all decide if they believe the surgery is for me and let me know.

I look forward to building friendships here to help each other along the way :)

Wish me luck with the visit :)

Losing,

I hope your visit went well today! Please let us know how things went. I'm a little over two months post-op from revision and still "new to the game", but will answer any questions you may have the best I can :P

Thanks Leslie! The visits went very well. I have to go back next Tuesday for an ultrasound - making sure there are no gall stones and I have to attend an information session which I'll do this Thursday. That's it...then the bariatric team meets once all my visits are set to decide if I'm a good candidate for the surgery. Once they decide, I pick a surgeon meet with him to sigh an aftercare contract and I get a surgery date.

This is the same bariatric group that did my lapband so they have my full file so that helped. They've changed a few things since I went through the program such as now they have a two week liquid diet pre-surgery and that was explained to me today.

I do hope this site gets busier with members. Are there only a few right now? I now LBT was super busy and so full of information. I hope this one gets busy too. Thank you for your replies Leslie...I appreciate it :)

i had the lapband 12/23/2008, and than i had my gastric bypass revision on 10/25/2011.i totally regretted the band instantly.fills/unfills.exercising more and harder than prior to the band. my doctor kept saying that i shouldn't have to work so hard to lose the weight.i was working out 5-6 days a week 1-2 hours a day. alot of things i could not eat or tolerate. a lot of things i had given up prior due tomy diabetes. the wt loss is slow. my dietician says because of the amount that i need to loose. yet i am still obese. So my journey is a very hard journey for me. being 50 years old and menapausal doesn't help at all.

Losing,

How was your recovery with the band removal? I'm going to have mine removed sometime this month and I'm wondering how much time I should take off work. I'll hopefully be having rny surgery in March, so I'll be taking off 4 to 6 weeks then and I want to take only a minimal amount of time off from work now.

Have you been approved for surgery yet?

Hi startingover....sorry I missed your post. It's been quite a journey for me and I haven't been on the boards as much. The recovery wasn't bad although because I had a really bad prolaps I did have to stay in the hospital for 3 days with an NG tube. It got that bad..then I stayed 1 more day because of snow and they didn't want me traveling in it. Otherwise once I was home it was super quick and I was back to work the following Monday.

So I've had to start my gastric bypass journey again due to my PCP wanting me to see the bariatric group associated with the medical group she's in. It's actually a nicer place than where I was going and I'm happy about the change now. I attended my information meeting on 3/12 and now I'm seeing the surgeon and therapist on 3/29. They said because this is still considered revision surgery the process will be quicker for me. I sure hope so, because I want to get on the losing weight side of this whole thing. I don't want to gain anymore to say the least. I'm hoping for surgery by summer...not sure how it will all go but, looking forward to getting the help to beat this weight battle.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
