My dietician told me that no one was ever going to put the money up to fund a study on straws -- she said to try, and if there's no problem, use them. I waited a few weeks after surgery and have been using straws since with no issues. I agree (for me) that using a straw helps me get in more fluids easily.

My NUT was telling me about some big conference out of state she was going to recently on the controversy of straw vs. no straw. She said it really is a huge thing in the bariatric doctor community.

I want to see the first organization that gets funding to scientifically study such a serious issue :P

In the meantime, I think if it feels good, you should do it and if it hurts, you should stop.

There. Maybe someone will give me the million dollars I just saved the, in research funding! :)

I drank from a straw right out of surgery. Love my straws!

This is just my opinion, but I think there are a lot of things that we are told that are meant to protect us from ourselves or as a blanket rule for something a percentage of people may experience.

The straw, for example, is certainly something that helped lead many of us to obesity. We can down sodas/milkshakes/slurpees/etc. so much faster, right?

Some people may experience the gas/air issue, but many do not.

If it is a blanket rule, many will listen and follow orders that will help them avoid having possible gas issues and probably (more importantly) falling back into old habits.

Gum and popcorn are other popular topics. There may be valid reasons to avoid all of these items, but done "responsibly", they are probably fine.

Just since you mentioned it, I am 11 days out and chewed gum yesterday and it instantly made me sick.

I don't know why gum is off limits, but I've read a lot of people say so.

It wasn't mentioned by my doc or nut not to, so I chew it to help me get down my Water (without a straw - lol!). And I waited 3 months before trying it (because I'd heard it was a no no here) which might have made a difference with getting sick. At 11 days, most anything has that potential. :-)

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
