Iron still low and I'm frustrated!

Recommended Posts

I also am quite Iron deficient. Everyone is different' date=' but OJ definitely wouldn't work for me. 1) Iron supplements can lead to acid reflux. Iron + OJ would likely make me feel awful. 2) OJ occasionally has Calcium in it.

You absolutely cannot take iron with any calcium. Not even your Multivitamin. Calcium bonds to the iron, making absorption impossible. (It's fundamental chemistry.)

What works for me? A piece of turkey before bed with an iron pill and a Vitamin C.

Iron supplements are finicky for sure.... Good luck![/quote']

So let me ask you, how long did it take your iron levels to rise so you can have surgery?

I started with one a week for two months' date=' and still have to go once a month until my levels get up to normal. It all depends on how low you are.[/quote']

That is so sad to hear. If the insurance wasn't changing it would be all good. Now I know I have to find out if the new insurance has wls or I've done all of this for nothing.

I am not who you asked that to, but my surgeon did my operation before I even started my infusions.

It might be different for you. My friend only needed one infusion and never needed another one.

I also have very low Iron. I had 2 infusions prior to surgery with the last one being 2 weeks prior to. My pulmonologist ordered them. I went to the cancer treatment center in the hospital and had them. I reported in at 9am and was done and out by 3pm. they also added a little benedryl so I slept thru the whole thing. I'm 5 weeks post now and I think my Iron is still very low. I'm so so very tired right now and have been since Friday and I'm covered in bruises. I was in my surgeons office today (but not for me) and mentioned it to the nurse she said if I have any other symptoms to call, otherwise they will take blood at my next appt.

I really hope this doesn't hold you up. Call your PCP and insist they do it. You have that right. And if the PCP won't go see the blood dr as suggested above. Scream and holler until someone listens to you!

I won't have the levels checked til right before surgery. (Feb). So I don't have any way of knowing for sure. I do know that my doc told me the best chance of getting my Iron levels up are to take it without any Calcium. (She said another patient of hers had issues when taking it with her reg Multivitamin due to calcium...even though there wasn't that much Calcium in the multi Vitamin.

I had to have an infusion before surgery. I only needed one. It was still on the low side and I cluld have had one more, but I had a reaction to the Iron. They decided my numbers were okay for surgery.

Unfortunately I do need another infusion since it has gone down tremendously since surgery. We will be trying some different type. I felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest and it was hard to breathe. After the infusion though (a few days later) I started to be warm. I was always freezing and I didntcrave chewing ice anymore.

Anyways I definately recommend the infusion!

This thread is so concerning to me! My NUT called a couple of weeks ago to tell my Iron and Vitamin D levels were low. She said I needed to add a Vitamin D tablet to the multi, but no additional iron. She said also the low levels wouldn't delay surgery, and the next recheck would be at my 3 month post-op visit. She didn't relay any actual values to me, but after reading this thread, I'm terrified this might be that random something that delays surgery, or if not completely corrected in advance, might be the thing that leads to complications. Pardon my ignorance, but if my levels don't get to that normal range before surgery, what am I looking at? Fatigue? Poor healing? Worse?

I would call and find out your ferritin, hemoglobin and iron saturation levels. See how low they are. If they're not too bad, you'll probably be ok with pills. I was still able to have my surgery and I healed just fine and have had no problems. I still go in for infusions once a month.

I agree with butterfly. I didn't have any complication after my surgery.. I'm post op 2 months.. With the exception of being tired which happens after you have had surgery..

If your doctor wasnt worried I would just ask the numbers. Dont stress. A lot of people have low Iron but not enough for infusions and to delay surgery

I was told by my new surgeon that my Iron levels won't be a problem. Just continue to take them as I'm taking them and I'll be fine.

Now I am really frightened. The doctor scheduled me for my first infusion, but they neglected to mention the side effects! I really only wanted to know if it would cause Constipation like the Iron pills, but they didn't know the answer to that question. So frusturating.

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
