TO cruise or NOT TO Cruise! Help!

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of waiting on approval for the sleeve surgery. I am also going on a family cruise October 25th to the Bahamas. I have been told I can have the sleeve surgery in September most likely middle of September. I will be post op surgery 5 or 6 week by the time I go on my cruise. Or should I wait till after the cruise. My question is should I have surgery before or after the cruise? I will be on soft foods during the cruise.

I am a huge cruiser, 3 in the last 12 month. From what I can gather post op dehydration is a big challenge for many newly sleeved. That soon after surgery I would be afraid of not knowing how to live and drink with your sleeve. I would schedule my surgery either months before or right after getting back. No point in taking a great vacation and getting stuck in the medical center the whole time.

My choice was to have my surgery after my vacation. This is why I am having surgery in 2 weeks and not already post-op. I just really wanted to enjoy my vacation without worrying about having to eat differently than my family because I was in a certain stage of my diet. It was well worth it to me to wait that extra month.

I'm two weeks out and scheduled to cruise in November. At two weeks out I think I've got a good handle on what to expect at say 5 or 6 weeks out. Things become easier everyday. I'd go ahead and schedule the surgery and the cruise. Oh, one more thing, I felt and feel so good, so improved over what I felt before surgery.

Can't wait to be in the Bahamas!

Everyone heals differently. Will you be disappointed if you are tired and mostly want to sit in a lounge chair and people watch or read? Will you be sad if you see others eating huge meals and you are eating a few bites of very restricted diet? Do you have a backup plan if you have a complication post-op and have to cancel?

If you are comfortable with those things, I would do the surgery first. By 5 or 6 weeks most people can get fluids in without a problem. I would plan on bringing Protein powder or ready to drink shakes and something to treat diarrhea and Constipation. I ever was motion sick pre-op, but riding in the car bothered me at first(less room for stomach acid?) so maybe something for motion sickness too.

I had surgery on Aug 19th and just cancelled a cruise on Oct. 24th Not because I don't think I will be feeling good but because I won't be able to drink. The friends we were going with are big party people and I just thought being around a bunch of drinking wasn't going to be good for me.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
