I did a sleep study and was told I had sleep apnea. I had to do a second sleep study so they could put a cpap on my and adjust my levels as needed. Then they issued me my cpap.

2nd means you have apnea and the second test is to set your cpap levels...

sleep apnea can actually be very dangerous and even fatal. It leads to congestive heart failure and sudden cardiac arrest. When the body stops breathing for short periods of time (apnea) the oxygen levels in the body drop and the heart has to work harder to get oxygen to the cells. Sleep apnea is not a scam, it is a serious medical condition. Just because people are noncompliant with the cpap does not mean they don't need it, it just means those people are noncompliant.

OK did you ever stop and think how horrible that obstructive thing feels on your face while your trying to breath and sleep? Everyone is different but I tried 100 times every night to try to get used to that disgusting machine, each night it took me hours to fall asleep so finally I chose sleep. It now sits in my closet. So some of us try to deal with it. It doesnt mean we are noncompliant they have to figure out a better system than making people feel like there snorkeling while they try to sleep.

I was told I had to come in and sleep with the mask on. Thanks everyone for responding! I guess this means I might have it, no worries :)

I refused to take it. I think this is a money making scam. Everyone I know that has been diagnosed with this has a CPAP machine in their closet, never use it because they can't. I snored and probably had the so called disease but I have been thru many surgeries so why do it now. It seems that we go thru an awful lot of testing for this surgery compared to other surgeries where you just go and have the surgery and you are done. Maybe it's a way for the insurance to drag it out and they hope that you get tired of all the hoops and don't have the surgery. This is my opinion.

I totally agree with you about the money making scam. I had no indicators of sleep apnea but after going to see the sleep specialist (an M.D.) he ordered the sleep study anyway. My insurance denied approval for on site sleep study so I took home the kit. I passed with flying colors. Even though I knew it was a little scammy, I followed through bc I wanted the surgery and wasn't going to do anything to jeopardize my chances. But for what it's worth, my dad recently was diagnosed with such extreme sleep apnea that that Cpap machine probably saved his life. He's fit and trim and healthy as a horse otherwise...

Most people don't know that you can do the study at home. I did. I was 225.00 that way. It was initially ordered by the surgeon/anesthe. with a note in the paperwork about it being a possible comorbidity. I did the test and returned the machine. A few days later I phoned the lab and was told I had moderate apnea and would need Followup care. My insurance had already approved me by that time. Although my surgeon had my results they never mentioned them or told me I had a problem or needed followup. So I agree with Mokee. Although sleep apnea is a very real and serious medical issue it is often used as a way to get insurance approval if other criteria isn't met.

I don't think it's wise to advise against sleep studies or imply they're bogus. Knowing and treating sleep apnea in WLS patients can be the difference between a successful surgery and potential complications or even tragedy.

I hate my cpap machine but I use it every night as people die from it. A friend of mine just lost her 32 year old single brother who had sole custody of his 3 young kids. He refused to use his machine, he thought it was a scam too and was not as serious as it can be. Now 3 kids have no parents.

I was diagnosed with sleep Apnea about 3 yrs ago. @ my first sleep Study they told me I had restless leg syndrome, I had several apneas in the night, how deep of a sleep I was in, if I dreamed. Went back the next week and they set my Cpap Machine on 3. I have to have a new sleep study every so often the last one was about 2 months ago my machine was reset to 12. But my Pulmonary dr. Is the one who set those appt. he told me now that I have sleep apnea if I don't use my machine it could kill me. I try to use mine every night. Sometimes I don't sleep we'll with it so I take it off. But I can tell the difference when I don't use it, I have no energy it's a life saver!

I don't advise against having a sleep study done. I advise that after you have one you see a qualified Dr and are treated for your issues if it is determined by the testing that you have them. I don't like that it is used as a way to push approvals through, and it sometimes ( not always) is.

You need to try a different mask. That's what I had to do because I can't stand things on my face. Now I sleep with it and I know when I don't use it I really tired the next day. I do hope my sleeve will eventually take care of the aapnea

I've broken up with my cpap and the hubby says my snoring is mostly gone and when it does put in an appearance it's quiet.

Question for you all. Did your PCP order the test or did the Surgeon order the test. My reason for asking is because when i saw my PCP this week for my physical she asked me questions like do i wake up with a headache' date=' is my sleep broken during the night other than to go to the bathroom, Do i fall asleep during the day. All of my responses were no. She didn't say anything more about the sleep study after that.[/quote']

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
