EKG vs Stress Test

Recommended Posts

I'm just wondering why everyone's having different test done before surgery. Why are some having stress test and others EKG? I had EKG done two days ago and now I'm looking at some pics of pre op patients having stress test done and not EKG. It kind of worried me why the stress test wasn't done on me . I was actually cleared for surgery by my cardio but why not a stress test? I didn't think of this when I was at my appointment but now I am. What if they missed something? My cardio doc said I have a very low risk of heart failure during surgery. Anyone know why some cardio doctors do stress test and others EKG?

An EKG is a basic test and a stress test is a comprehensive test of the heart. Not everyone will need a stress test based on their current medical conditions as well as their age and their other risk factors such as cholesterol, smoking, family history of heart disease, etc.. I didn't have a stress test, but I had a both an EKG and an echocardiogram which is like a medium level test because I have an irregular heart beat. If all you needed was an EKG, then that means you have a healthy heart.

I actually didn't have a stress test prior to surgery either, maybe do to age and everything else clearing....... Before surgery I had one a few years before it . The was I would look at it is that it's like a cat scan.. They probably don't do it unless they feel they have to.

I have had stress tests, both physical ( treadmill) and injection. Both were done based on my history and on other testing. My heart shows scarring from previous heart attacks. For my sleeve surgery I did not need to have another stress test. I'm not a medical person but I think it only shows them how your heart reacts to sudden high rise in heart rate. If they thought you were at risk they would have ordered it. Since your cardio Dr cleared you I wouldn't worry. Those other people just likely have different health histories than you do.

I had all three, EKG, echocardiogram and stress test. The only reason I had the last two was because of a "blip" on my original EKG. If my original EKG had been fine, my surgeon doesn't require the cardiologist to do the last two.

I have no heart testing. I am 45, no high cholesterol, I was adopted so I have no idea of family history

Oh wow, I've never heard of anyone not having any heart testing done. I have no co-morbids either but still they wanted to be sure everything was okay. Just goes to show each Dr is different.

Now that I think about it, I did have an EKG done just about a year ago and that was normal so maybe they go by that.

The practice I am use is a center for excellence and are known to take on the cases no other Dr want to touch so they are very experienced. I have been a surprised at the minimal preop stuff they require. Perhaps when I have my hospital preop that will be more extensive than what has been ordered so far.

2x4. How many heart attacks have you had?? Are you sleeved already? If so, has the weight loss reduced the amounts of meds you take??

Really curious as I have had 2 attacks.

I had an EKG, ecocardiogram, stress test and lung function test. I am 34, normal blood pressure, cholesterol etc. However, my insurance required all those tests regardless of past health, age or family history.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
