Breakfast suggestions

Recommended Posts

I don't like to eat as soon as I get up. I prefer to take something to work w me and eat after an hour or so.

I need some high Protein suggestions. No shakes! I've been doing a lot of deli meat and cheese but need a change.

Suggestions??

Someone posted an egg casserole muffin recipe recently. I can't remember the specifics, but it was eggs, cheese, turkey sausage and some other stuff like tomatoes all mixed together. Then cooked in cupcake tins so you have individual ones and you can grab one to take with you.

I'm doing Danon's Light & Fit pineapple Greek Yogurt with a few tablespoons of Nature Valley's Protein Granola. I never used to eat Breakfast, now I really enjoy it!

I totally get not being a breakfast person, but I've done my best to get over it, because the sooner you get a little somethin' in the system, the sooner your metabolism wakes up and realizes it's a new day :) Right now I'm on full liquids, so it's pretty much been a Protein shake, but before my pre-op diet I was alternating Protein shakes on some days with a non-fat greek yogurt with a dab (seriously, maybe a teaspoon) of honey or maple Syrup, and some fresh fruit like banana, strawberries or blueberries. Honestly, if you can manage it it's really a good thing to get at least a few ounces in within that first hour, even if it's something small like a half-glass of skim milk or a baby bel. I know my energy levels improved a lot when I started making myself get on track with that.

Good luck!

OMG - greek yogurt plain is just nasty, I hopefully will be able to tolerate Protein Shakes for breakfast. I really am not a breakfast person - I never got hungry until about 2 in the afternoon - of course once the hunger monster woke up it was eating until bedtime

Even before surgery, my favorite breakfast was lowfat cottage cheese with fresh strawberries & blueberries. I'm on liquids now- 6 days out and I can't wait to get to purée in two weeks so I can have cottage cheese with a teaspoon or so of sugar free jelly. fruit will be later! Yum!

Cottage cheese or flavored Greek yogurt (I love Chobani and Liberte brands).

Eggface's bites (crustless quiches) which are easy to grab and go.

Protein crepes - I make a bunch in advance, fill with almond butter, banana and cinnamon or thin slices of lunchmeat and some cheese, roll them up and wrap them individually in plastic wrap, then put them in a baggie in the freezer. I grab one out in the morning, nuke it for a few seconds and I've got a yummy Protein boost breakfast.

Protein muffins or Cookies, depending on how far out you are. I make a granola type cookie that's chewy and full of whole grains, dried fruit, nuts and some Protein powder. Same goes for muffins - a great way to get in some Fiber and being homemade they have better ingredients and that protein boost that you won't find in a commercial product. I make several dozen at once and freeze individually the same way I do the crepes.

I keep a dozen hard boiled eggs in the fridge at all times. One of those and a cheese stick is an easy way to get 150 calories and 12 grams of protein.

And I know you said no shakes but I have one "real" coffee each morning followed by a protein coffee - a scoop or two of my Protein Powder shaken up with 8 ounces of coffee. I drink it hot or iced, depending on my mood. I'm going to drink the coffee, anyway, so this makes it into breakfast on days I don't feel like eating. Most days I do this, unless I have errands to run and know I'll be busy and need something more substantial. I can also mix with tea and make a chai latte out of it with my some spices and vanilla protein powder.< /p>

What kind of protein do you use?

Syntrax Nectars - I enjoy them and despite the fact that they use artificial sweetener (except the naturals) they don't give me any side effects. Other powers cause bloating or gas or they taste off to me.

Cheri, you've got this down to a science. I need to do the same.

Give yourself a break and go for the 4% cottage cheese. The extra 20 calories is sooooo worth the improved taste.

And, of course, there are always scrambled eggs.

I thought Greek yogurt was nasty too. But then I learned to mix in sugar-free blueberry preserves and Splenda, and now it is my go-to evening snack. All that protein!

Finally, can you have applesauce yet? I get the Mott's no sugar added applesauce and mix in cinnamon. Such a refreshing morning treat after my Protein.

Try chia seeds in the yogurts. It boosts a bit of Protein as well as adding a different texture. Suggestion; mixed them in the night before giving it a tapioca feel if that appeals to your tastes.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
