Ok here goes my first post, 29 years old and I live in NJ. BMI is 36 and I am 255 pounds. Every person I talk says "your not that bad" or you dont need that so on and say on. Even my doctor says I am one of the lighter patients that would have the surgery. I qualify because I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I have already begun the process had my both nutrition appointments, pysch and upper Gi. I am planning on having my surgery the second week in January so it gives me some time to think about it. While going through the process at first i was very excited. However, my mind is starting to play games and I am now a little scared. Just looking for a little reassurance.

You have to do what you think is right for you. If you think you can lose the weight and keep it off then that is definitely the way to go. But if you already have comorbidities then and you have trouble losing weight then maybe the benefits will outweigh the risks and pain of surgery.

For me, I know that if I didn't intervene, I was going to have diabetes. I had high blood sugar and they were just about to diagnose me with Diabetes when I decided to go with the sleeve.

It is normal to be nervous but you also want to be sure. Good luck with your decision and your weight loss journey.

My opinion is...why wait till you are heavier...do it now before you get bigger. If you qualify then you are one of the lucky ones. Also having a lower bmi makes you a great candidate for optimal success. Good luck in your journey! I wish I had started it before I got to where I finally said enough was enough. :)

I'm also 29 and my BMI is 40.1. I've had at eat a little to get me past 40 for my insurance. I'm also thinking about the sleeve bc I have tried pretty much everything to lose weight and I always gain it back. I'm hoping that by choosing to do the sleeve I can reteach myself when to stop eating and to make better choices. I feel that if I'm gonna go as far to get surgery to help me then I'm gonna give it 110% to lose weight and keep it off for good! Good luck:)

It is a MAJOR surgery, and something to really think about. I know soon when I start to see effects I may feel different, but right now I totally regret it. I weighed 220 and I wish I just went to traditional dieting.

Welcome to VST!

I was taken off of one of my high blood pressure meds when I was discharged. I was taken off the other one just yesterday. I haven't had a Metformin for diabetes since I entered the hospital. It was so cool to me to see my surgeon take me off of all these meds.

Recovery? I was out of work for three weeks. To me, I recovered the first week and enjoyed the other two weeks of vacation. :D And the worst part of the first week was the first hour after surgery. I felt better by the minute after that.

I lost 50lbs preop and 34 postop. My waist size before surgery was 62. As of this morning, it is 56. I wore a pair of pants to work this morning I had not been able to wear for over 10 years.

Hang in there! From what I've read it is extremely normal for many people to feel the way you do right now. Sending prayers your way from Fort Worth, TX! Meanwhile take one day, one sip of H2O/protein at a time and soon it will be next year and you'll be a healthier you!

What specifically do you think is making you feel the way you do?

I think it was the anesthesia but I can't know. Right now it is the massive gas pains that I can't get rid of. I don't mind the diet part of Clear liquids, and I am walking my ass off! I just hope each day gets better. I had a hard time sleeping last night because of gas.

Hi there,

You are right to think this through, ultimately ony you can decide what is right for you and your overall health. I have been overweight my entire life, tried every diet (multiple times with varied success) and knew this was the right path for me. But everyone is different. I had a very smooth recovery and now at almost 7 months out I could not be happier. Yes, there is discomfort in the beginning, as there would be with any surgery, so you do need to take that in to consideration. What it is not.... a cure all, magic bullet, poof I'm thin fix. It will take time, commitment and energy to find your new normal. The built in restriction is fundamental for my success. I always had a sluggish metabolism and raging appetite. This greatly helped my appetite. I'm not hungry and a few ounces physically satisfies me. Get all the information you can, and ask the questions you have. You will find a wealth of knowledge, experience, compassion and empathy here.

Best of luck to you!!

Hi Jilly:

I'm sorry you are stuggling. I can say, the gas pains will get better. You are walking, that helps. I found a heating pad also helped with some of the persistant gas pains too.

Best of luck!!

I remember how tough it was in the beginning, I'm only 1 month post op (as of today :D ). But I can tell you as each day goes by you will get a little better. And by a month post op I am willing to bet you'll be back to your old self. JerseyGirl always gives great advice. I also used a heating pad and it was a life saver in my first week home. You should ask your surgeon's office if you can take some Gas-X strips. It may help, it may not, time and hydration are the best healers.

How about this: you will most likely be on some sort of insurance mandated diet for either 3 or 6 months. Most insurance companies require this. Use that time to diet on your own. If you lose the weight and manage to keep it off, then you may not need the surgery after all. My surgeon has turned away patients from surgery who did extraordinarily well on their pre-op diets because he's a believer in WLS not being for everyone. There are plenty of people who are not successful long term in diet alone (like me), that's when it's good to think about surgery.

For me I believe as long as you lose the weight and become healthier it doesn't matter how you go about it, as long as you are successful. Is surgery drastic? That depends on the individual's circumstances. A lot of people need a drastic intervention in order to change. Sure there are risks to everything in life and this needs to be weighed against potential benefits. Only you can decide.

it's amazing how different it is for each person. Do what your surgeon directed you to do and it'll all be fine soon!

I can identify with what you are going through. I have lost 75 lbs on my 4.5 months of pre surgery dieting. My surgery date is July 25, and I have wondered if this is necessary.

I have concluded that it is necessary for me. Although I have been successful on my own during this short period, there will be a time when I reach my goal. I believe the sleeve will be a great tool to help me stay at the right weight. I hope you come to a decision that feels right for you and wish you healthy results!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
