I'm getting extremely grouchy and impatient over this weight-loss crap. I just want to know everyone else's progress, who got sleeved in January. I was advised by my surgeon to never eat less than 1000-1200 calories a day, I don't. I eat healthy foods and I work out 4-5 hours a day! Yes, that's correct I meant 4-5 hours. I walk 6 miles, do the elliptical for an hour (4.5 miles), I swim a mile, I do strength training (weights) for an hour, and sometimes I do more after that like skating or dancing, Ect. Now, can someone please explain to me why I've only lost 57 pounds in 4 and a half months when I literally changed my whole life style from no exercise to massive exercise and crap for food to "healthy" stuff????? I've been stuck at 212 for weeks!!! WTH? My goal for May was NOT unreasonable! I only wanted to drop 15-20 pounds and um... As it stands I've lost a whole THREE!!!! What is wrong with me?

Hey... I'm getting sleeved on Thursday so I can't speak to the feeling post-op however I've been an athlete through college, my entire family consists of personal trainers etc, plus I've attended EVERY support group my clinic offers at UCSD... So my thoughts for what they are worth:

1. I've heard from many many people that at some point on your post sleeve weight loss journey you will hit a plateau. Some go a week - 6 weeks with no weight loss. This is due to a lot that is biologically happening to your body. In essence your body is saying "Hold the frickin phone, what is this, I'm going to hold whatever I get." The good news is this will subside once your body understands this is the new normal and your loss will continue.

2. From experience, it sounds like your working out a ton! Have you checked your BMI? The weight may still be there in numbers because my guess is you are gaining muscle weight. How do you feel? Are you more tone?

3. 57lbs in 4-5 months is wonderful!! The average person is lucky to lose 10lbs/month. Sounds to be like you're right on track.

I absolutely understand you are frustrated and cannot say I wouldn't be the same, but my advise is to stay on track, focus less on the pounds and more on the positive and amazing changes it sounds like you are making. The rest will follow.

Congrats btw!

Have you tried backing down on your exercise? How about for 2 weeks, you back down to 2 hours a day with one rest day built in and see if that scale doesn't move.

I know that sounds counter intuitive however, we also know that eating less doesn't always equal weight loss. Sometimes you have to eat more to lose, and not work out as much for our metabolisms to be at peak performance.

Give it a shot...what do you have to lose?? ;)

Thank you for your responses. I've not tried everything you've posted. I need to measure myself but I wouldn't know if I've lost inches this far so it's not going to help right now. I don't understand how this is even possible. I'm only losing 2-3 lbs a week IF THAT and that is what I should be losing without exercise!!! So.... If I wasn't busting my ass for 4-5 hours a day in the gym I wouldn't lose anything? You see where this gets frustrating? :( I'm just at a loss. I watch shows and hear stories from friends about ppl who lose a lot more weight than this in a shorter amount of time with less exercise. I'm not happy.

Vanessa to be honest

57pds in 4 months is great!! I have only lost 35pds and was Sleeved in January remember before the surgery losing 1pds was impossible so keep it real... I am grateful for what I have achieved after being sleeved no more cholesterol or diabetes meds and 35pds gone. I'm learning to forget about the scale and just focus on living my life in a healthier and positive way... I assure you continue what your doing and before you know it the scale will move. Good luck on your journey and God bless.

Hello!! I had my surgery on January 16th. I have lost 46 lbs and couldn't be happier! I love my new life!! I have been at a plateau for a few weeks, but continue to exercise 4days a week for an hour and continue taking my Vitamins and I do still eat some of the foods I love but in smaller portions! I love being able to taste the foods I love but not be able to overdo it or overeat!! Keep working hard! It pays off! Don't be so hard on yourself! You are doing great! I agree you are working out too much!! I don't think any trainer or medical professional would agree that it's healthy to spend 6 hours a day exercising! I think I would be totally depressed if I were doing that and not losing!!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
