So, I've got a conundrum about Prilosec...

Recommended Posts

I've had heartburn maybe a dozen times in my life, all due to margarita mix or whiskey sour mix. One Tums and it's gone instantly.

Doctor gave me a Prilosec script and I hate taking pills I'm not sure I need but I have been taking this anyways. The obvious answer is to not take it and feel it out, but I'm skeered. I am a week out and still getting used to not gulping. I am still in full liquids, too, so I have no clue how real food is going to go.

Should I test my tummy? Should I keep taking it until I get through all my phases? I am a wuss when it comes to unnecessary pain, so I don't want to bring something on, but why take it daily if I don't need to.

Thoughts?

My dr. has all his patients on a PPI for six months.

Too much acid can sometimes cause ulcers so I think the Drs. are trying to get our stomachs fully healed without any complications.

That's a fair enough reason. I will ask my NP on Tuesday, but if it's preventative in healing care, I don't mind taking it. If its for my comfort, I'm not sure I need it. Thank you.

I hate taking prescriptions too but I will take whatever the doc orders after my sleeve. There's a reason they write out scripts for us especially after being sleeved. Probably just helps to keep your stomach in check.

You're right. I was just to anxious to leave the hospital to ask the why of each med. I've never taken the nausea med I filled and the tummy spasm one just once. I guess I was hoping that the Prilosec was an as needed not a necessity. I will check into it!

I am 10 days out and have struggled with gulping. And i am a terrible pill taker so I have been dumping my Prilosec capsules into applesauce and taking that way

I didn't need prevacid until about a month or month and half post op so even if u were to try going without it does not mean it will not happen down the road

I'm with everyone. I think the PPI's (omeprazol 20 days for me, prilosec, etc) are just to teach your teeny new tummy to stop producing as much acid as it once did before cause too much is a bad thing. I was told no tums until week 4, so this is the alternative. I forgot to take it one night and woke up with gross reflux, so I'm not gonna chance it anymore.

if the prilosec is too hard to swallow ask for a different pill. I had the same complaint and it's slowly gotten easier. I'm on prilosec for one year after surgery. The sleeve is notorious for heartburn and, like others said, we don't want to damage our little pouch with an overabundance of acid. (At least that's my understanding of it)

You can always have your scripts compounded into liquid and flavored :-) I've done that with all mine and the ones that are not compounded I crush and pour down my throat followed by broth or Protein Shake.< /p>

i was wondering the same thing...until I ate something that was a little more acidic like chili. My tummy burned a little. I took the prilosac and I felt much better.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
