Sleeved May 15 and Regretting it

Recommended Posts

I don't know what's wrong with me right now. I'm feeling sad. I know it is all about mental strength and will power. But sitting here at Panera, studying, and occasionally glancing at people eating their delicious sandwiches makes me jealous. I jealously cuss them out in my head. I tell my parents when I get sad but they are absolutely no help. They simply say well you are the stupid one you did this to yourself! :( they are right... I paid to get my sleeve and now Im regretting it. I lost 15 lbs on my own just with working out and hi prot low carb diet...

Will I ever be able to eat half a sandwich with ease again ? That is my question..

I had surgery may 15. I started week 2 of my liquid diet. I ordered Broccoli Cheddar and asked them to sift out the solids, I had about 4 tablespoons and my tummy hurts. I thought i could get away with the creamy Soup since its low cal, but i guess not. I'm feeling like I regret getting sleeved. I'm in a slump. Any advice.

I also had surgery May 15, and I do know how you feel. My family ordered pizza tonight and I want some SO BADLY right now!! I almost cried in my 4 bites of broth. BUTTT..... you are not 'the stupid one', and you will ABSOLUTELY be able to enjoy a sandwich (or me, a slice of pizza) again someday soon. Read this blog, and you'll see it's common to feel this way, and these are still early days! You did something awesome for yourself and your future, and it WILL be worth it. Just hang in there, and believe!! I'd also suggest maybe finding a different source to vent your frustrations to cause it sounds like maybe your folks aren't your cheering squad quite yet... give it time, and you'll show everyone that this was the BEST decision you've ever made. :)

The first three weeks post-sleeve are the hardest it seems. You may be able to eat a half a sandwich eventually and most food has become enjoyable to me again but I can only eat small amounts. It is natural to grieve for the loss of your best friend/lover/coping mechanism etc., food. But you made this choice for a reason. So try to focus on that and look for some new ways to find enjoyment and pleasure in life that doesn't involve food. It's not easy but you can do it! If I can than you can too. We are all here in the same boat so you are not alone in this. You had the courage and determination to get the surgery so buck up girly! Food will always be there saying "eat me I'm soooooo delicious and I'll make you feel happy"! That happiness is very short-lived in my experience and soon followed my massive regret which is followed by more eating to assuage the bad feelings, etc. You are stronger than that or you wouldn't have chosen this path.

I'm told the first month is the worst, but it get's better and most seem to come to love their sleeve. You just have to get through that horrible beginning. Good luck!

I too was sleeved on May 15th and I am feeling great. I think it is important to try and make sure you try not to put yourself in situations which will tempt you, at least at this point.

I can't imagine what it would be like to not have such a supportive family, but you need to find you people who will support you because this is one of the best things you could have done for yourself and your health.

In time the extreme limitations will be gone and you will be able to figure out what you can and cannot have which will be the healthiest choices for you.

I wish you luck and all the support!!!

You are NOT STUPID! You made a choice to lead a healthier lifestyle...to elongate your life! Don't let ANYONE make you feel that way!

I'm not sleeved, but I am on this forum everyday, I go to support groups every week, and my doctor is very one-on-one with his patients. I've learned that these feelings of regret are very, VERY normal! It's such a HUGE adjustment to your lifestyle and the eating habits you've ALWAYS known. One day you will be able to eat those things you love, but only in moderation, never in the oversized portions that we serve ourselves, or that gets served to us at restaurants. This stage will pass. You will have moments of regret and a sense of loss. Allow yourself your human emotion, cry if you must for a little while, but then you need to put your big girl panties on and wipe them away. You will not do yourself any good dwelling on the should'a, could'a, would'as. Focus on your goals, focus on your post-op diet, and before you know it you will be able to eat the things you like. The additional plus is, you'll be a thinner, healthier you when you get there.

Good luck to you!!

You will be able in time to eat some what normal. You will be able to eat almost half a sandwich. Broccoli is very hard on your stomach, I am three months out and I have only eaten broccoli twice. You need to give yourself and your stomach time to heal. It is a process that we all most walk through .I know that you want to eat normal, but take it slow. Some of the Soups I tried did not do well with. Tomato based Soups did not set well with me. You might want to stick with broth based soups starting out. My taste for foods also changed you may have to try alot of your favorite foods before you find something you can enjoy.

First off' date=' this is normal at your time. Second, it's not like you can go backwards. The great thing about the sleeve is that it can't be reverse.

I'm about 2.5 years out. I can eat about half a panini slowly now, even the bread. And save the rest for later. It takes time to learn how your sleeve works, but after just a few months, you won't really notice it.

And after a couple of years like me, your new eating arrangement will seem normal, and you won't be able to understand how regular folks eat such absurd portions and meals. This way is way better, it just takes some time.

Keep your head up![/quote']

I am happy to hear that I will be able to eat a few things I enjoy! Thank you, you give me hope :)

I am very much grieving. I feel like I'm going through a break up! I did make this choice for a reason. People may think I'm crazy but I went to Mexicali on may 11 and then 4 days later I had surgery. I don't think I was mentally prepared, like others are here. Bu thank you for responding to me.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
