coffee drinkers?

Recommended Posts

Decaf coffee is allowed. I use bondage lacy aid milk instead of cream and I use raw stevia to sweeten it. I can only drink a small/tall vs my usual venti. I am 31/2 weeks out from surgery.

I still don´t have an answer for why you think that regular coffee is not allowed? Why do you think it´s bad?

Some doctors don't allow it for various reasons. I think it is mostly in the US. My Australian doctor and nutritionist have no problem with it. IRS a great way for me to get some milk into my day since I don't like milk on its own.

I LOVE coffee. I've been drinking it since I was about 2, lol. My grandparents gave it to me. Anyway, my particular surgeon/dietician's rules require to stop coffee at least 2 weeks before surgery to avoid caffeine headache while you are post op. Then no coffee for at least 4 months, then it should be Decaf. That was one area I just was not willing to change, and told them that. I was cleared for coffee at 6 weeks, and have one cup of black coffee every morning, and two on weekends. I sometime will have some iced coffee with equal and a little coffee mate sweet Italian Creamer in the afternoon, or the Chike iced coffee. According my dietician, they want us to avoid coffee in the beginning to prevent dehydration and allow time for healing, then later because it interferes with Iron and Calcium absorption. She also mentioned last week that there have been studies showing people who drink coffee in the morning, tend to be hungrier in the afternoon. I've found that to be true for me, but I'm not giving up coffee. My solution is to have that one iced coffee in the afternoon, lol! Really curbs the hunger for me. I have found a way to spread my Vitamins out around it so they are still absorbed properly, and I get in plenty of other fluids, so I'm ok with it.

It´s somewhat intresting how something is considered bad in one part of the world and good in another. As you know I live in Sweden (Europe) and here coffee is actually considerd good for you. It´s low in calories and it gives you energy. The dehydration part may be true, but it´s just not servere enough to make me give up what is so pleasureble. I drink the coffee with plenty of milk, lactouse free of course. Lactouse I am told to stay away from.

I have a Starbucks gold card, and that means we are there too darn much!! My dietitian said she wouldn't ask us to do something she herself would not/could not do. I was allowed regular coffee after 6 weeks, sadly, the taste was different and stayed that way until month #3. I've been drinking coffee ever since. I started off using skim milk and stevia, now, since I reached goal, I've switched to 2% in my coffee, it is not what I 'drink'. When we go to SB, some times, as a treat, I'll use skim milk and put a splash of 1/2 and 1/2. I drink 3 cups every morning and some times I'll make a small pot mid-afternoon. Coffee - my drug of choice! :)

My center says two cups max per day. My center gave us a big binder with all kinds of instructions and nutrition infor. Great reference.

We got something similar....I still refer to it some times. I call it my 'Bariatric Bible' :)

coffee (& other things) tasted very weird to me for a few months. In the early days Tim Horton or Dunkin Decaf went down well. Now, back to normal. I drink coffee every day, sometimes i freeze it in ice cube tray then add to choc prot powder in blender! Yum!

Oh, warning to newbies! My husband accidently brought me a cup of dark roast coffee early out, and after second sip i was in big trouble. I got very sick, vomited abt 5x, nothing would stop it. That brew of coffee was just too potent and i havent tried it since!

I visited a nutritionist for the first time ever this week and she told me that regular coffee is not good for WLS pts because the caffeine actually dehydrates. Instead of counting it as a plus in my Water intake she counts caffeine as a negative.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
