Anyone have kidney stones from surgery?

Recommended Posts

I heard you can get kidney stones after weight loss surgery. Has anyone else heard of this?

I haven't heard about kidney stones, but I have heard that gall stones can occur with rapid weight-loss, which is why many people are on a med to prevent them.

I had a bout with kidney stones about a month ago. I am 5 months out and down 65 lbs. I woke up about 3am with splitting pains in what I thought was my side. Passed out twice at home, by the time I got to the ER I was vomiting. 2 shots of morphine and 1 shot of tramadol (?) later and I was finally knocked out. The largest was 4mm. Doc said the passing out/vomiting was from the pain. (The contrast they tried to make me drink didn't help any!) No pain since I left the ER and doc said they probably passed without incident. Said cause was probably change in diet, and to increase my fluids intake also.

I've been diagnosed with kidney stones, but I am 3 months out and mine are all over 13mm. I've had terrible utis for the last 3-4 years. I doubt they would have gotten that big in just 3 months!

I am sorry to hear you have kidney stones as a post op! Definitely no fun. No fun at all! Are you going to blast them with lasers or try and pass them as-is. I am curious what the precursors are for creation of kidney stones. I heard a while back that they can be caused by excessive Protein, but do not know If this is the primary cause. We all take 80 g daily or higher as the WLS requirement. I've been taking my ideal body weight in Protein (180 g) for a while now, but have also been drinking 1-1.5 gallon of Water a day. Perhaps it is the large amount of Water that protects the kidney from stones. What do you think?

Either blasted to surgically removed they are waaaayyy too large to blast. The are all over 1/2 diameter!

I had surgery on may 20 and kidney stones were a concern for me because I have had them a few times before. If you have had kidney stones before your Dr. can draw blood (or test the kidney stone if you passed one in the hospital) and see what mineral is causing you to make excess stones. That way you can know for sure what mineral to avoid. My Urologist and Nephrologist told me to make my urine really acidic. Drink Water with lemon, lemonade, oj, etc. the more acidic your urine is the harder it is for the stone to form.

I fear mine are the type produced from having so many upper utis... Will find out more when I see doc. I've just talked to her on the phone about my ct scan results... They're not passing, but still have constant kidney pain

Crystal light? Maybe it is the Vitamin c in there that makes it harder for the stones to form. The stones usually are caused by the oxidation of Calcium that enters the kidney after being drawn away from the skeletal system due to high levels of Protein and/or certain drugs, herbs and chemicals. It is critical to always drink a lot of Water to help your kidneys out.

I have had chronic kidney stones since surgery. Luckily none that have been obstructive. I knew I had them because I get a dull flank pain, vomiting/nausea, and then "gravel" (looks like pepper) in my urine. I feel like I have the flu when I have them--probably about 6 times since my surgery 18 weeks ago. The stones were confirmed via ultrasound and they were all small and nonobstructive. I'm wondering when I get the vomiting if one might be stuck and then by the time I had the US, it has passed. I still need to do a 24-hour urine test so they can determine what type of stones I have, but here is the advice the kidney stone specialist gave me: 1) drink at least 100 oz of Water per day 2) consume citrates, which are in citrus, melon, and tomatoes, 3) avoid oxalates in tea, spinach, rhubarb (this only matters if you have Calcium oxalate stones--don't know what kind I have yet). He did say that kidney stones are more common in bariatric surgery patients. I never had them until surgery.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
