I am a flawed human being. Because I followed my pre op diet in no way makes me perfect.

I think we all go into this with different mind sets, different expectations and different goals.

I obviously have a weight problem and struggle just as much as the next guy with food.

When on the pre op diet I did not look at it as a diet in the normal sense. It was a pre op prep for a major surgery to me. That's how I approached it.

"Cheating" really didn't occur to me.

But I will say as a food addict if I were asking everyone if they cheated or read post after post about people cheating and it all turning out fine, would I have cheated? Who knows? Maybe...

As an addict you sometimes look for enablers.

I try to be as honest as I can about where I'm coming from. Again I am not perfect but I do care.

I think that if we were all perfect we would never have needed this to begin with. Some doctors realize that and route for you when you have success. Mine is one of them

It is not about being perfect it is about trying to exhibit a bit of self control. My weight problems started from the time I was a little boy coming from a family where everyone was overweight. When I became an adult, I had a job where I traveled extensively and did not make the best choices and went to bed shortly afterwards from my crazy days. My wife and I were also foodies. She could eat anything and not gain weight but I could not.

What I am trying to say is that I made a conscious decision to change for life and could not mentally succeed unless I stuck to the plan and did not cheat. When I gained weight I was told by the surgeon's office to changes my eating and to lose weight in order to qualify for surgery. Each doctor is different but don't think a lack of self control should be celebrated. As one poster's surgeon said "he has never seen anyone who didn't cheat", was a sad statement to make. A surgeon should want the patient to succeed not just to get a paycheck. Others may not agree and think I am being sanctimonious but that is my view of my journey. How others view their respective journeys is up to that individual. As I said for me, cheating was and still is not an option for me.

I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to put you guys down but as one who has bad zero self control I think I did pretty damn well. Ok I cheated one night and my doctor chose to be sympathetic. I applaud all if you that we're able to get through pre op on liquids only. I really do. You have more self control than I did. I'm 2 weeks post op today and never felt better in my whole life. I'm not saying every one has a free pass to cheat. My only point that I wanted to make (don't think I did a good job though). Was just because a person doesn't make it through the pre op diet with out cheating gives no one the right to tell them "maybe you aren't ready". It's totally different after surgery and your mind is in a different place. Motivation triples and because of the sleeve you are physically limited. Sorry if I came off snarky. I will root for all of our successes and forgive forgive all of our failures. On another note 2 week follow up tmrw. Can't wait to see my weight!!!!!!!

Dont worry get back in the game, 3-5 weeks down the road this will all be a distant memory. Alot of ppl think theyll never eat those yummy bad for u foods ever again. Well never say never key is moderation and the frequency. The only really bad for me food i really have is a skinny cowb choco bar during my tom i am 13 weeks out from vsg i go to the gym 3-5 days a week an run 3-4 days, down 73 pounds. Just remember dont over do it stick to the plan, its best in the end for pre op diet.

To all the women out there - can I just say that PMS and liquids only DO NOT MESH WELL TOGETHER! I think my husband is about ready to divorce me and my step-kids are staying away from me! LOL

Man I'm trying hard to be nice but I'm snapping more than a turtle!

Omg@tlah!!!! I am positive many sleevers cheated on their preop diet!!! That doesn't mean they will not be successful at their weightloss. Thats why many have the surgery' date=' we cant do it alone even for two weeks. I cheated and Im still gonna be a skinny b**ch when I cheat post op too!!! If you have had this surgery and are doing everthing perfectly, why did you have it done in the firstplace??? That's all![/quote']

I wish you the best but the sleeve will not work unless you use the muscle between your ears as well. I did and followed my surgeon's directions with no complications

I have heard and seen so manybcomments from people saying that if we cannot follow the pre op diet then we will fail after surgery. I think that is all crap. Most of us have been eating whatever we want and whenever we wanted too, this is why we are having the surgery in the first place. I struggled the entire 2 weeks but it's a learning experience and we will learn how to eat after surgery. Changing your life takes more than a 2 week pre op diet. I know I am going to make mistakes but you bet your ass I'm going to pick myself back up and try it again. My only concern is today is that even though I stuck to my pre op diet as far as what foods I could eat, I did have days I ate over the 1200 calorie limit and yes I did cheat a few times, I have 3 days til surgery and I'm going to hunker down and stick to all liquids and not exceed 700 calories per day, I will be devastated if my doc has to cancel my surgery....

I think the pre-op diet is hard because it's a shock of reduced calories, no real food, and so restrictive to a person with a whole stomach. The reason we were over weight to begin with is because we were hungry and had a large capacity. We all over ate for a variety of reasons, and some of them were physical reasons.

While I do think adhering to the pre-op diet is important, it irritates me when I hear people saying if you can't do the pre-op diet, then you'll never succeed post-op. Unless you have a crystal ball, you don't know, and that's not enough information to make that judgement. I think the fact the OP has some insight into the need to stay on the pre-op diet and willingness to continue to it speaks more about determination than having cheated.

Incidentally, I did not cheat on my pre-op diet of two weeks of liquids, but I don't think that guarantees my success, either. It's what we do over the long term that determines our success.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
