Those who had over heating and sweating issues prior to surgery chime in..

Hey All..

Well, I am still 5 months away from surgery ,but I am still doing my research and trying to learn everything I can. One thing on my mind though is? What is it like afterward?

For me, I grew up my entire life since I was 5 years old, running around without a jacket on or sweatshirt. Ever since I was a kid, my body temperature has been out of whack. My temperature remains a degree higher then the average normal temperature in a body. I would literally sweat on my face, down my back, down my pants, everywhere...and even when I was younger I was skinny and I still sweat abnormally...

Fast Forward: I am 26(or am I 27??) and I live in flip flops 365 days of the year. I NEVER wear shoes or socks. Why? Because for me, its crucial to wear flip flops, to maintain my body temperature at a balance. If i wear shoes or socks, I already start sweating and as it is, i break out into sweats constantly throughout the day, so bare feet or flip flops is how I roll (The beauty of course is that I only spend 5$ once a year on shoes)

What I am curious about though, is this whole post op life. According to what I have been reading, the area in the stomach that produces Grehlin, not only regulates appetite but also body temperature. My body actually over-produces Grehlin and under produces Leptin..hence why I can eat and eat and eat and never get sick and barf and why I always feel hungry no matter what or how much I eat. So thats why they are saying my life will be more normalized once they remove the Grehlin producing site in my stomach through VSG...but what I really want to know is: Will i finally be able to be cold? or like normal people and feel the cold? Cause after years of sweating. I rather be cold then look hot and sweaty when going out in public..It would be nice to feel cold when its cold out and have to bundle up and wear sweaters like everyone else.

Also, when you exercise post op, do you sweat the same? more? less?

I'm a little over 6 months out and almost 80 lbs down, and I don't sweat anymore. Prior to surgery, I looked forward to wearing a sweater/long sleeves, so that no one would know I was sweating. I dreaded summer because of sweat showing through my clothes. I'm happy to say along with losing the excess weight, I've also lost the excess sweating! I hope you get the same results. It was just an added bonus to the whole journey!

Yes, you will feel cold! Yippeeee!! I have sweated and overheated all my life, and I could not understand seeing normal sized people in sweaters in restaurants and all bundled up on cold days. They were in a scarf and sweater, and I was sweating with a short sleeved t-shirt on. But, I had my surgery on 12/26/12 and I haven't gotten warmed up yet. :) I do sweat when I exercise, but I can acutally walk around the mall and not stop to wipe sweat and not have to stop and sit down to cool off. If I do sweat occassionally now, it is a very small amount and not nearly as noticeable as before (my hair would literally be wringing wet and sweat rolling off my face just walking around a store). I know some folks wouldn't understand, but not sweating and being cold is one of the things I looked forward to happening to me after the weight came off. I am down 77 pounds and have 28 more to go, and the sweating has drastically decreased. So, look forward to a sweat free life, and be prepared to buy some sweaters and sweat shirts, Sista, because you are going to need them!! Best wishes!

Let me tell you, I was the same way, Once I would start sweating, forget it, It would look like someone threw a Water balloon on me, even in winter. Since the surgery, I'm freezing cold all the time. Even on a warm 85 degree day, I'm still not sweating or feeling sticky. My energy bill has gone down considerably because I don't the house like a meat locker anymore. I hope it works for you like that because I know what a burden it can be to always appear like you just ran a marathon around people.

I still sweat a bunch when I exercise, however in my everyday life it's not a big problem like it use to be. I use to carry around extra clothes with me so I could change my shirt when/if I needed to. I actually keep sweaters with me now for the evenings or breezes cause I get a chill which is the first time in my life. I still live in flip flops, but that's because I love them.

I am 3 weeks and 3 days post op and I am loving not being hot all the time! I always envied people who could wear sweaters I would wear a light jacket and have to discard it most days. I just ordered sweaters in a much smaller size, yahoo!!

I didn't run hot like you, but i sure did sweat excessively at times.

Then, losing weight, I am more prone to getting too cold. I sweat normally - like when I am doing crossfit or spinning classes - I sweat alot but no more then the other fools in there with me. :)

Well let me tell you before I had surgery I would have the AC on 24/7 even in winter it could be 50 outside and I'd still have the AC on and at night I'd go to sleep with maybe a sheet, well now I use a heavy blanket at night because I finally feel cold and its hot out here today it's 94

I answer this as I sit shivering in my office. I used to be the one saying "it's too hot in here" and sweating my way through the day. Now 8 weeks post op, I am the one that is too cold!! I look forward to going outside where it is 90 just to warm up!!

I too was much colder post op. Nice! My family is very happy because used to freeze them out turning down the AC. For most of the last 15 months I would hardly sweat when I exercised but as my body has leveled out and is stabilizing I notice I am sweating more, but nothing like I did pre-op.

Well, I can't answer post-surgery, but I have to shower 2 (or more) times a day, because I'm always a sweaty mess, and I'm ALWAYS too hot... I hope it helps! :)

I used to sleep with the fan hitting me, even in the winter. Now, I frequently need to wear layers. I am always cold at night. It's almost 90 degrees right now and I'm not hot, just comfortable. I never sweat anymore, unless I want to, wink wink.

Yep, like the others - much less sweating post-surgery, and I'm ALWAYS cold when I'm in the office or in A/C (was previously always HOT!).

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
