Breakfast Ideas

Recommended Posts

I am about three and a half months out and my regualr Breakfast is an toasted English Muffin with some cream cheese and a slice of ham. I never finish it but it is pretty good. I use the double Fiber muffins and non fat cream cheese. Sometimes I just toast the muffin and ad a slice of american cheese. Sometimes I just have a cup of coffee with milk and call it breakfast. :)

-Greek yogurt with berries and a couple teaspoons of Special K Protein Cereal (can add Protein powder to the yogurt)

-Morningstar vegetarian sausage patties with cheese and sometimes SF Syrup (a couple of times I've had with half a low-carb English muffin or half a thin bagel but the bread fills me up too much and I can't eat enough Protein, so I just stick to the patties)

-Morningstar vegetarian meatballs with ricotta, parm cheese, and Tomato sauce

-Before I was on solids, I liked diet hot chocolate with Protein Powder

-oatmeal with Greek yogurt on top, chia seeds (not eating these yet though), and a little SF jam

-Refried or whole Beans with cheese, Greek yogurt and salsa (sounds weird for breakfast but I really like this--you might too if you like your grits savory)

-Low-carb/high-protein pancake made from egg whites, protein powder, flax meal.

I probably eat the veggie patties the most bc they have 10 g of protein each, so I can almost eat 2 of them or 1.5 with some melted cheese or part of a cheese stick.

The last couple of weeks I've gotten into a bad habit of skipping breakfast and drinking coffee, and I feel like it makes me hungrier at night after dinner. I am back to religiously eating b-fast. Gotta stoke that furnace first thing.

I can't eat yet (only 10 days post-op) but my recommendation would be not to feel locked into "breakfast foods" for breakfast. If you're bored with that kind of stuff, eat whatever you want! There's no rule that says you can't have chicken and veggies for breakfast if you want. As long as it's something on your "ok" list, and you can tolerate it, go for it! I always find it funny that so many of us think it's fine to have breakfast for dinner, but not the other way around!

I had to google what hominy was lol. I'm Australian and we have nothing like that here' date=' other than oats for porridge or rice cereal for babies.

I'm just not hungry of a morning, but find myself grazing at night, do you find this too? I never want to force myself to eat just because I SHOULD eat something, because I like feeling restriction and don't want to get into the habit of forcing my stomach.[/quote']

I'm not really big on eating when I first get up, either, but I do try to have something within the first 90 minutes after I get up anyhow. The reason is that studies are showing that people losing weight are more successful if they have at least a small amount of food first thing.

There are two reasons that I've seen given for this: one is that it kick starts your metabolism into gear for the day, and the other is that you tend to not eat as much for lunch or get caught up as easily in grazing your way through the day - I guess that sort of makes sense, as it evens out your blood sugar.

Plus, my NUT expects it of me anyhow :)

Grits are dried ground hominy. It's kind like malt-o-meal but definitely a southern thing. Depending on what part of the US your in you would either put sugar or salt in them. Never understood the salt thing lol :)

What oh girl some salt and some American cheese slices!

Have you had polenta?

I've had polenta "chips" that we're baked. Like big thick French fries.

Breakfast food idea

Mix Egg beaters & 1 egg

Turkey sausage

Onion

Any other veggies and or small amount of cheese (i like Spinach & a touch of mozzarella)

Pour mixture into small muffin pan cups (3/4 full)

Cook at 350 for 30 mins

Makes 12 small breakfast cups...

Bag 1 or 2 in ziploc bags and refrigerate.

Pop in microwave in AM for 30 sec and you're ready to go for the week

I compared dried polenta to grits and the only difference I saw was the color - polenta has this deep rich yellow color and grits are white. Cooked in a pot with Water, polenta had the same consistency as grits cooked the same way (except that they took longer to cook).

I'd like to try your baked polenta chips recipe, it sounds great!

This has been my favorite breakfast of late, one lite toaster waffle topped with about 2 tablespoons of low fat ricotta cheese and some jam. Cook in toaster oven for about 5 minutes or until the ricotta cheese puffs up. You can use sugar-free preserves if you want. Peanut Butter is also good on a toaster waffle or english muffin in the morning.

My usual breakfast is either half a cup of Fage 2% Greek Yogurt with Torani Syrup and 2 tablespoons of unprocessed wheat bran, or half a cup of 4% cottage cheese, also with bran added. Neither of these is mind-blowingly good, but it's easy to put together a few ahead of time and grab one as I'm going out the door and eat on my way to work.

On weekend days when I have more time I sometimes make oat bran pancakes. One quarter cup oat bran, 2 eggs, 3 packets Splenda, vanilla extract & two tablespoons of greek yogurt. I eat them with real butter and sugar free maple syrup, but you could also leave out the splenda and vanilla and use them for savory applications. By the way, that recipe makes 2 servings.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
